1% Club host Lee Mack shares Coronation Street ambition
“I’m not joking.”
The 1% Club host Lee Mack has talked of his ambition to appear on Coronation Street, even going as far as envisaging a storyline.
The comedian has dabbled in acting with roles in Not Going Out and Doctor Who, and has now revealed that he’d love to set foot on the cobbled streets of Weatherfield – if only for a short period.
“I’m not joking, I would like a small part in Coronation Street,” he told Emily Dean on the Walking the Dog podcast. “I’ll just pop in [and] go up to the bar at The Rovers, they go: ‘Are you new round here?’
“I go: ‘Yeah, I just sacked the secretary and I’ll tell you something, she’s not coming back if she’s spreading rumours like that about me’. And then I just go again. But I’m not willing to spend more than two or three days on set because I’ve got things to do.”
While it remains to be seen if Mack will get his wish regarding Corrie, the actor is currently performing on stage for a West End run of The Unfriend, which sees Mark Gatiss direct a script from Steven Moffat.
The play follows a suburban couple whose polite invitation to a stranger on holiday has dire consequences, with Mack being joined in the cast by Sarah Alexander, Nick Sampson and Frances Barber.
“I’m delighted to be joining The Unfriend with the brilliant Sarah Alexander, wonderful Frances Barber, and of course all the other amazing cast,” said Mack in a statement last year. “It’s such a fantastically written play that I might even go the whole hog and learn the words.”
The Unfriend is currently playing at Wyndham’s Theatre in London, with performances currently scheduled to run until March 9.
