The First Karate Kid Movie May Explain A Huge Part Of Cobra Kai’s Miyagi Mystery

A key detail could explain a crucial part of Cobra Kai’s Mr. Miyagi mystery. In Cobra Kai season 6 part 1, Daniel LaRusso was hit with a number of surprising revelations about his mentor in The Karate Kid movies. Based on what was found in his box of secrets, there was a side to Mr. Miyagi that he carefully kept hidden from Daniel.

Among the assertions that the first five episodes make about Mr. Miyagi is that he competed in the Sekai Taikai tournament, committed assault and robbery, used an alias, and had partial ownership of a boxing gym. Obviously, understanding all of this will require a deeper investigation into his past on Daniel’s part in Cobra Kai’s remaining episodes. However, at least one aspect of it may not be hard to decipher, especially when taking into consideration an existing element of Mr. Miyagi’s backstory.

Mr. Miyagi’s Assault & Robbery Accusation Could Be Related To His Wife’s Death

The date on the newspaper article found in Mr. Miyagi’s box shouldn’t be ignored when judging the implications. The date places the robbery in 1947; that means if Mr. Miyagi really did steal an expensive necklace, the theft happened just three years after the death of his wife and child. It’s known from The Karate Kid that his wife, who was kept in a Japanese internment camp during World War II, died in 1944 due to issues that arose during childbirth. How closely these events are aligned in The Karate Kid timeline suggests a connection between the two.

That gives credence to the idea that Mr. Miyagi’s actions could have been a response to the possible disappearance of his wife’s belongings. Given what Mr. Miyagi’s emotional state could have been three years after losing his her, it’s not implausible that he would react strongly if someone had possession of something that he associated with her memory. It could be that he was only trying to retrieve her necklace – or perhaps what he thought was her necklace, resulting in the alleged crime.

The Death Of His Wife Could Tie Into The Show’s Other Mr. Miyagi Mysteries

What happened to his wife could turn out to be the central piece of the puzzle. With what’s currently known, it’s hard to identify a direct link between his wife’s death and the other reveals tied to Mr. Miyagi’s past in Cobra Kai, but it makes sense that most of them (including the stolen necklace) are intertwined in some way. That looks likely, considering that the man at the boxing gym connected the “robbery” to Mr. Miyagi fleeing the United States.

It stands to reason that Mr. Miyagi’s apparent participation in the Sekai Taikai is related to all of this as well. When the Sekai Taikai’s history was briefly discussed in Cobra Kai, it was indicated that the upcoming tournament is the first to be held in the West. That suggests that Mr. Miyagi would have had to leave the country in order to take part in the competition. So whatever drove him to steal that necklace, whether it was his wife’s death or something else, could be what set him up to enter the Sekai Taikai.
