Doctor Who Star Promises a Season Full of Scares: ‘It’s Shivers Down Your Spine’
Actress Yasmin Finney, who is set to play the new character Rose on Doctor Who’s 60th-anniversary specials, gives an update on the upcoming episodes.
Yasmin Finney, who is joining the cast of Doctor Who in time for the 60th-anniversary specials, has teased that the new episodes will explore the horror genre further.
Speaking to Elle just in time for the release of Heartstopper Season 2, the actress shared her experience on the sets of Netflix’s rom-com and BBC’s sci-fi drama. When asked about what fans could expect from the anniversary episodes of Doctor Who, Finney promised “a lot of scary things” coming into play this November — apparently, the Weeping Angels-level of scary. She elaborated, “I think when you think of Doctor Who, you think of the scariest episode, the weeping angels. It’s the scariest episode in history and the most popular. I think in this series, I was scared when I saw some of the things. It’s shivers down your spine.”
Finney couldn’t disclose much about the much-anticipated episodes for obvious reasons, but she did promise that the horror aspect wouldn’t be the only thing to look forward to. “What I can say is it is going to be full of scares, full of laughs, full of all of it,” she admitted. The rising Doctor Who star also had a few kind things to say about Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor. She praised her co-star, remarking, “To act with Ncuti Gatwa is just amazing because we are both very young as well, and it’s just really nice to have that. He’s making history literally, and I’m just really happy to be a part of his world.”
Yasmin Finney Loved Working With David Tennant and Catherine Tate
The actress went on to talk about how much she enjoyed filming with David Tennant and Catherine Tate, who are making their grand comeback in Doctor Who’s anniversary specials. “It was just amazing to watch TV gold on set. David Tennant and Catherine Tate are two amazing, amazing actors. I grew up watching Doctor Who, watching David Tennant and Catherine Tate. That was my era in 2003. It’s crazy to be on a show that deeply has a lot f history with me. It’s just really, really fab,” she gushed.
Finney, who is playing the mysterious Rose, acknowledged the importance of the 60-year-long legacy that she was stepping into and how much of an impact another vital character, her namesake, had on the show. The Doctor Who star described her Rose as “very sure of herself and very confident,” adding that the name itself had “a lot of history,” which meant that there were certain expectations to meet.
She explained, “To play a character with such history, even just the name, you’ve got that pressure instantly that I didn’t have with Elle [Finney’s Heartstopper character]. It was a complete mind-blowing experience when I got cast. I can’t really relive it because I was so in the moment. At first, [the show] had a code name, and then I found out what the show was and I was like, ‘Oh my God, I’ve just been cast in Doctor Who.’ It’s a trans character as well, and it’s such a blessing as well to be able to play such a monumental character like Rose.”
