Lady Whistledown has become something of a staple in the Netflix series Bridgerton, and although Penelope’s secret could be revealed in the next season, the witty gossip monger must remain in the series. Bridgerton is a period drama produced by Netflix and based on a series of romance novels by Julia Quinn. The show follows the romantic trials of the eight Bridgerton siblings in Regency Era England.
At the end of Bridgerton season 1, audiences find out that the infamous Lady Whistledown is none other than Penelope Featherington, and at the end of season 2, Penelope’s best friend Eloise Bridgerton finds out her secret, creating a dangerous schism in their friendship. As season 3 delves into Penelope’s romance with Colin Bridgerton, it seems inevitable that her hidden identity will have to come out in order for her to have a healthy relationship. However, even if Pen is revealed as Whistledown, the series cannot get rid of the queen of Regency drama.
Lady Whistledown Is Vital To Bridgerton
Although Lady Whistledown is more of a secret identity than an actual character, she is absolutely necessary for Bridgerton to continue. Not only does Whistledown narrate much of the series in Julie Andrews’ voice, but her writings also move forward much of the plot. Without Whistledown, the gossip around courting season would not be so high, and also certain secrets may not have come to light, including Eloise’s fling with Theo Sharpe. In this way, Whistledown helps pace the story and add necessary plot twists and dramas.
In Julia Quinn’s book about Penelope and Colin, “Romancing Mister Bridgerton,” Penelope stops being Whistledown after she settles down with Colin in order to focus on their relationship. Although this likely wouldn’t be the reason for Pen to quit being Whistledown in Bridgerton season 3, the plot point infers that she gives up on her writing aspirations for Colin. Not only does Bridgerton need to keep Whistledown for plot purposes, it also needs to maintain Penelope’s passion for writing. The best way to do this is by repurposing Whistledown or giving Pen another job or project.
How Bridgerton Can Keep Lady Whistledown After Season 3
There are various ways in which Bridgerton can keep Lady Whistledown in the series past season 3 including giving her a new writer or reshaping the project overall. Perhaps in Bridgerton season 3 Penelope will quit being Whistledown because of the pain she’s caused, but the show could include a copycat that picks up Whistledown’s writings. This could continue the tradition while also adding a new mystery. Additionally, Bridgerton could have the Bridgertons forgive Pen for her mistakes and urge her to continue her project in a new, not harmful way, perhaps even with Eloise by her side and helping her. A more feminist outlook could be added to Lady Whistledown.
All in all, it’s imperative that Lady Whistledown remains in Bridgerton. Like any main character, Whistledown is a significant part of the series, and it would change massively without her. Whether Penelope stays at the helm or not, Lady Whistledown’s gossip and power must remain to give the characters and audiences a much-needed dose of drama.
