Coronation Street star ‘sad to leave’ as he addresses emotional exit
Actor Peter Ash, who is best known for his role in ITV’s Coronation Street has shared his thoughts on his upcoming departure from the soap as his character continues to battle MND
Coronation Street actor Peter Ash has opened up on his character’s departure as he faces a tragic death.
The 39-year-old, who plays the role of Paul Foreman quickly became a fan favourite when he first appeared on the cobbles in 2018. But the character has been hit with several hard-hitting storylines with his current narrative focusing on his battle with motor neurone disease.
As Paul’s condition worsens, his family and friends are coming to terms with the devastating fact that he doesn’t have long left to live. Speaking candidly about portraying Paul on the ITV soap, actor Peter appeared on This Morning to share his thoughts about leaving the show which is imminent.
Discussing his exit, he told presenters Rochelle Humes and Dermot O’Leary that he felt “sad” to leave. He said: “It was a bit of a double-edged sword really because you trust in this amazing storyline but unfortunately it does mean it comes to an end.”
He added: “So yeah, mixed feelings! Sad to leave- it’s a great place to work, have so may great friends there, I’ve had a really great time. But also feeling really kind of honoured I guess.”
A special Coronation Street episode was aired showcasing the harsh reality of living with MND. The episode on Friday (July 26) focused on a day in the life of Paul and his husband Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) as they spent a memorable day together.
After being informed that it was no longer safe for Paul to use the stairlift to leave their home, Billy took him out one last time to visit places that held significance for them, including the church where they got married. They also headed into the Rovers for a drink with mates, including Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce).
However, during the emotional episode, Paul made a significant decision about his life. Paul wanted to end it that very day. Later, using his tablet, Paul expressed to Billy his wish to end his life.
Initially, a devastated Billy refused but eventually agreed to go ahead with the plan. However, their scheme was disrupted when Chesney turned up unexpectedly due to a family crisis.
As one of his kids had an accident, he needed desperate help and asked Billy and Paul to look after his other children for the night. The uncles agreed and the children stayed over, preventing Paul’s initial plan to take his own life.
The next day however, Paul revealed his decision to postpone the plan, giving him and Billy additional time together. But fans seem to think another character might assist Paul and have pointed their fingers at Todd.
A Coronation Street viewer wrote on a Facebook page devoted to the show: “Anyone else think Todd will be the one to set Paul free?” Another fan responded: “I think he will.”
Yet another was certain, remarking: “ABSOLUTELY 100%.” Adding to the conjectures, one commented: “I hope so, Billy would be left feeling too much hurt.”
