Coronation Street’s Sue Nicholls says there was ‘no question’ about returning to ITV show
Sue was first spotted on the cobbles back in 1979
Coronation Street’s Sue Nicholls shared her future on the cobbles as she approaches 45 years on the show.
Sue Nicholls is well known for playing Audrey Roberts on the long-running soap. She first joined the popular ITV soap back in 1979 and is now one of Corrie’s longest serving stars.
However, the star began life in Weatherfield as a guest character who only made occasional appearances. And she has revealed it was only meant to be for a week.
Appearing on ITV’s This Morning earlier this week, she spoke about she is approaching 45 years in the role. She added: “I was asked to come for a week and soon after that I was asked to come back. There was no question of ‘no thank you’ because I’d had such a ball all that first week.”
On her relationship with Helen Worth MBE, who plays her daughter Gail, Sue said: “I love her to death, I love doing scenes with her. When we fall out [on screen] we don’t fall out, it’s just a true family thing that happens in life.”
Sue opened up on her future on the cobbles. She added: “Coronation Street is now my life. I find it easy to come here, I love the people I work with. I love what they give me to do, and I want it to go on.”

The salon owner debuted in an episode at daughter Gail Platt’s engagement party to Brian Tilsley – and become a permanent fixture of the cast in 1985. She has since developed into a staple of the programme and has been involved in famous storylines such as her dramatic relationship with the conman, Lewis Archer.
And Audrey remains one of Corrie’s most important characters. She has recently been at the centre of one of the show’s most dramatic storylines following Stephen Reid’s reign of terror. Audrey struggled to come to terms with her onscreen son being a deranged serial killer.
Away from the screen, Sue’s life is fortunately less turbulent than her onscreen counterpart. The star’s TV debut came in another soap, Crossroads, as waitress Marilyn Gates back in 1964 – and she also achieved success as a musician from the show.
Sue herself has made many friends on the ITV soap. Speaking on This Morning, she spoke of her former on-screen loves as she paid tribute to the late John Savident, who played Fred Elliott. Sue said: “He was lovely, and it’s sad news recently of him leaving us.”
