Doctor Who boss hints Millie Gibson is RETURNING to Coronation Street after she was dropped from BBC show
She went from troubled soap teen to time traveller in just five years.
But Millie Gibson, 19, could be seen doing a 360 turn after Doctor Who showrunner hinted the actress is returning to Coronation Street.
Millie starred as the 15th Doctor’s companion Ruby Sunday in Doctor Who but, despite the success of the 2023 Christmas special, she was axed from the show’s second series.
Showrunner Russell T Davies has reportedly already written out her character and will only retuned to ‘tie up loose ends’ after her first series ends.
Yet all is not lost for the star, as it is rumoured that she could be returning to her Corrie role as Kelly Neelan, a part she played from 2019 to 2022.
Rumours among soap fans have been rife as they are convinced they have sussed out Millie’s next TV move following Russell’s comments during a commentary of the Christmas Day 2023 episode.
Sitting alongside Millie and the episode’s producer Chris May, Russell joked about Millie’s name being broadcast across the screen in big letters.
He suggested that was what was missing from her time in Coronation Street.
‘Should’ve had that cat and the cobbles and Millie Gibson,’ he said, before assuring her that he’d have a word with the team over at the ITV soap.
But one Twitter/X user pointed out that he seemed to mumble ‘when you go back’ at the end of the sentence.
This mumble led to spiraling rumours on social media as fans are evidently eager to see the blonde beauty back on their screens.
The upcoming 2024 season of the smash hit sci-fi show will return to screens in May for an eight-episode run, with Ncuti Gatwa taking over as the iconic Time Lord.
However, Millie’s character Ruby will reportedly be replaced by Varada Sethu for Ncuti’s second series.
An insider told The Mirror: ‘Millie Gibson has all but left now and there’s a brand new companion, which is really exciting. Russell is keeping things moving and isn’t letting the grass grow, that’s for sure.’
It has been claimed that Millie will be finishing up on the show in the coming weeks to ‘tie up loose ends’ and will not appear in the 2024 Christmas special.
She will reportedly only appear in a handful of episodes before being replaced by Varada, 32, who is said to have already started filming at the show’s Cardiff studios.
Varada is well known for playing DS Mishal Ali in the BBC apocalyptic TV Series Hard Sun and also featured in Now You See Me 2 as Michael Caine’s character’s assistant.
She is also recognisable for her role as Cinta in Disney’s Star Wars spin-off series Andor, starring Diego Luna.
Previous Doctor Who companion Bill Potts, portrayed by Pearl Mackie, only had a one-series run on the sci-fi show alongside Peter Capaldi’s version of the Doctor.
Other companions have had stayed on the show for a number of years, including Jenna Coleman’s Clara Oswald, Billie Piper’s character Rose Tyler and Karen Gillan’s Amy Pond.
