Doctor Who star Karen Gillan reveals pregnancy and debuts baby bump in return to spotlight
Scottish actor Karen Gillan, best known for her roles in Doctor Who and the Marvel franchise, has seemingly announced her pregnancy while attending the Toronto Internation Film Festival.
The 36-year-old screenstar showed up to The Life of Chuck premiere party – alongside Doctor Strange star Chiwetel Ejiofor and actor Tom Hiddleston – in a yellow mini dress with a draping shoulder detail.
The star was gently smiling as she cradled her stomach in what appears to be her first public appearance in several weeks.
The Guardians of the Galaxy star quietly married her husband Nick Kocher (from Atlanta, Georgia) in 2022 at Castle Toward in Scotland.
The couple have largely kept their relationship away from the spotlight but they have occasionally attended premieres together.
The Amy Pond actor last appeared in Steven Moffat’s latest series Douglas Is Cancelled where she was praised for her performance as TV presenter Madeline opposite Hugh Bonneville who played the titular Douglas.
Karen has previously spoken about her plans to have children. In 2018 she said on the Michael Rosenbaum podcast: ‘Of course, I need some little ginger children running around.
‘I definitely want them, it’s going to be hilarious. I think I would be a good mum. I feel like I would definitely be good at playing with the kids, like being one of them.
‘I think I would start them off watching The Exorcist.’
Although the actor has seldom opened up about her relationship with comedian Nick, she did once recount the story of how they first connected.
‘Oh gosh. I slid into his DMs on Instagram!’ Karen told hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos on Live with Kelly and Mark in 2023.
‘He popped up on my recommended friends list on Instagram. The algorithm is tearing the country apart but it brought me together with my guy.’
Alas, he did not respond to her on Instagram so she tried her luck on X instead.
‘I DMed him on Twitter saying, “Hi, your tweets are really funny. I’m Karen, by the way.” It wasn’t very interesting. I hadn’t really read his tweets,’ she added.
Earlier this year, Steven, who also cast Karen as Amy over a decade ago, spoke about her ongoing friendship with the actor, and his cameo at her wedding.
He told Metro.co.uk: ‘I’ve never been out of touch with her, although obviously she’s been living in America, so I haven’t seen as much of her. But, you know, I made a speech at her wedding and so on.
‘I swell with completely unjustified, unearned pride when I see her on a huge poster or on the side of a bus. That all comes down to her talent and her ambition, but I nonetheless give myself a pat on the back for it.’
The happy news comes after fellow Doctor Who star Jenna Coleman also shared her pregnancy after showing up to an exhibition in a long floral dress while holding her very large baby bump.
