Doctor Who Would Do Better Without This Extremely Overused Enemy In S14

Sometimes it’s better to let go.

There aren’t many comebacks that wouldn’t get Doctor Who excited at this point. With Russell T. Davies bringing back the era of NuWho that many current viewers grew up with, every other name that pops up in the news regarding the show automatically makes the experience much more exciting.

David Tennant, known as the tenth incarnation of the Doctor, returns for the three specials as the Fourteenth, as does his companion Donna Noble, portrayed by Catherine Tate.

Although their journey won’t be long, it should definitely revive the interest of the Doctor Who audience and prepare the ground for the arrival of another Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa.

On the other hand, with the overwhelmingly positive reaction of the fanbase to everything RTD is bringing to the table for series 14, it’s easy to get too carried away and weaken the plot by adding too many comebacks, easter eggs, and references.

Some fans feel that the showrunner is already walking a very fine line between playing into nostalgia and desperately trying to bring back a time that has passed many years ago.

The last thing anyone wants is to see the Fifteenth Doctor overshadowed by his own past, no matter how much fun it was. That goes not only for friends and companions but also for enemies.

Perhaps the best known of the Doctor’s enemies are the Daleks, the aliens who want every other living thing in the universe dead.

Although they had their brilliant moments during the Classic Who era and the first series of the reboot, they seemed to lose their charm between series 5 and 6 and never really got it back.

In the end, the Daleks were neither funny nor genuinely scary in any of the episodes that followed, leaving fans more disappointed than excited. So when the BBC teased the comeback of another familiar enemy towards the end of series 14, fans were hoping to see anything but the Daleks.

With an audience so used to epic finales, nobody wants to risk blowing it on something so unnecessary.

Whether the Daleks will return or not, we’ll have to wait and see. Doctor Who will return this November with three 60th anniversary special episodes, and then begin airing series 14 around the holiday season. Stay tuned for more updates!
