Former Doctor Peter Capaldi Reveals Why He Won’t Return to Doctor Who
The Scottish actor shares the reason why fans shouldn’t expect to see him return to Doctor Who anytime soon.
Former Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi has opened up on the possibility of him returning to the series in the future, ruling out any further appearances on the show.
Speaking with STV News, Capaldi was asked about the new Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials, in which David Tennant returns to the starring role for the first time in over a decade. When asked if Capaldi would ever return in a similar fashion to Tennant, the Scottish actor said the following: “I like the idea of ‘I’ve gone.’ All the Doctors I knew were there, and then they were gone, which is part of the whole thing.” With this statement, Capaldi is referring to the regeneration process of the Doctor, in which the show is able to continue while moving on from the main star.
Former Doctor Who stars coming back to the series after they left isn’t an uncommon occurrence. Aside from David Tennant’s current run as the 14th Doctor, he also came back for the show’s 50th anniversary in 2013, when he appeared alongside Matt Smith and John Hurt. Tom Baker, Paul McGann, Sylvester McCoy, Peter Davison, and more have also returned to the series in the last few years, and some look set to come back again in the new web series Tales of the TARDIS.
Paul McGann Could Get His Own Doctor Who Spinoff Show
Liverpool-born actor Paul McGann played the 8th Doctor in a made for TV movie in the 1990s, which was his only starring role in the franchise to date. However, new rumors suggest that McGann could get his own spinoff series in the near future, as current Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has gone on record to state how big a fan he is of McGann’s version of the character.
If a McGann-led show does happen, it would tie back into the mainline Doctor Who storyline as part of the Whoniverse, the new cinematic universe-type approach from Davies and the BBC, who are looking to try to emulate Marvel Studios’ structure in order to increase the popularity of the series. The aforementioned Tales of the TARDIS is the first spinoff in the Whoniverse, and is available now on BBC iPlayer in the UK, and features the return of previous Doctor actors from the 70s and 80s.
