Hollyoaks’ Gemma Merna wants a longer stay on Coronation Street
Gemma Merna hopes her Coronation Street character will be able to stick around on the cobbles for a longer stint.
The actor, who previously played Carmel McQueen on rival soap Hollyoaks from 2006 to 2014, made her Corrie debut earlier this week as newcomer Rebecca. The character had a fling with Adam Barlow after they flirted their way through a business meeting at the Chariot Square Hotel.
While Digital Spy understands this isn’t expected to be a recurring role, Merna has revealed that she wants to return.
Taking to Instagram after her scenes aired on Monday (April 15), Merna shared a clip from her appearance and said she thinks that Rebecca could “bring some fun and trouble to the street”.
“What did everyone think of Rebecca last night on @coronationstreet ?” she captioned the post. “So much fun playing this part, what an amazing time I had and acted with some incredible actors. Think Rebecca could bring some fun and trouble to the street. What do you all think?”
One of Merna’s followers then took to the post’s comments section to ask if Rebecca will be sticking around for longer, to which the actor replied: “I hope so.”
Reacting to the announcement of her casting last month, Merna shared on Instagram that she’d wanted to appear on the ITV soap ever since she was young.
“Being born and bred in Manchester, it’s truly a dream come true for me,” she wrote. “It’s been on my vision board for over 10 years, and finally, I got the chance to walk the cobbles. I can’t even believe I’m writing this. I think the best part was ringing my mum and telling her.”
