I Love Bridgerton, but Season 3 Proved Just How Clueless of a Mother Violet Actually Is
This woman lives in a fantasy world.
One of the best things about Bridgerton is the way it helps viewers escape the horrors of reality. By rewriting the worst parts of Regency history and focusing primarily on the lives of the upper class for the time being, the show manages to take its viewers into a world of never-ending balls and dreams of love.
For me, this was the perfect escape from the frightening reality of the COVID lockdowns back in 2020, and even better, an escape from the current news. What baffles me, however, is how this fantasy version of carefree reality is still too hard to accept for some characters in the Bridgerton universe.
Why Did Violet Bridgerton Not Like John Stirling?
After watching Violet Bridgerton meddle in her children’s love lives for two seasons, there was no doubt in the minds of the viewers how well she knew her children. She saw right through Daphne when she insisted that her courtship with Simon was fake, and she tried to be the voice of reason in Anthony’s plan to marry the diamond without love.
By the third season, however, I was disappointed in how she handled one of her children’s romances. With Colin, she seemed to be the same loving and knowing Mama Bear, pushing him in Penelope’s direction when he needed it most. With Francesca, however, it was a different story.
Francesca wasn’t the first Bridgerton to marry without love if she had to, but she was the first whose feelings were blatantly disregarded by her own mother. Whether or not Lady Bridgerton saw the sparks she needed to see to believe in their union, the way she almost denied her daughter the happiness she desired was unpleasant to watch.
Worst of all, John Stirling was not the person she needed to worry about the most! While her own son broke all the rules of courtship, ending up at the center of several scandals and a hasty marriage, it was quiet and polite John who made Violet worried by what seemed to be his mere presence.
Of course, as we all saw in the episode 8 finale, there is much more to be told about Francesca’s future journey, and it will definitely play out in her own season. But Violet’s reaction to John makes me even more nervous of how she’ll take the news about Michaela. The last thing I want is to be mad at Mama Bridgerton for another season.
If you are interested in what the future holds for Bridgerton and who will be Violet’s biggest headache in season 4, be sure to keep an eye out for news and updates. Let’s hope she learned her lesson!
