Kym Marsh wants to return to Corrie after landing ‘iconic’ role
The former Michelle Connor star looks completely different in her latest acting job
Former Coronation Street star Kym Marsh has said she wants to return to the soap in an interview with the ECHO this month. The 48-year-old, from Whiston, had a long-running stint on the cobbles between 2006 and 2019.
She left the ITV soap in order to pursue new opportunities, and she’s certainly done that since. Kym, who stars in Waterloo Road, is also currently playing Cruella de Vil in 101 Dalmatians: The Musical, with the hit show winging its way to Liverpool in just a couple of weeks’ time.
Kym said she’s very much looking forward to performing at the Empire, as it’s a theatre that “holds a lot of memories”. The star told the ECHO: “Some of the cast haven’t played there before, I’ve told them how amazing a city Liverpool is. I love being in the north, the audiences are so warm.”
Cruella de Vil is a far cry from Kym’s role as Michelle Connor in Corrie. She said: “It’s an iconic role, for sure. When I was offered the part I was never gonna turn it down, I love playing the baddie. I mean she’s obviously evil and wants to skin puppies and is insane, but she’s also very funny and camp, and I so love playing her because there are so many different sides to her.”
Kym said she feels “very lucky” for all the opportunities she has been given over the years, and said her latest role had her “on the back foot to begin with”. The actress and singer sprung to fame having been part of pop group Hear’Say, put together on reality competition show Popstars: The Rivals back in 2001.
But Kym said she was a bit rusty when it came to vocals when she landed the Cruella role. She said: “There are three massive songs, I’d not done anything like that in quite a long time. I found it a big challenge but it’s been great to get out and perform.”
Some of Kym’s former Coronation Street co-stars came to watch the show during its Manchester run earlier this year. Of Corrie, Kym added: “It was brilliant and will remain a huge part of my life, it was amazing that I was there for such a long time. I wouldn’t be returning any time soon, but never say never. I’d like to think I would go back if it suited us both at the time”.
She said: “It would have to be [a role] I could get my teeth into, I’d quite like to be the bad guy in a drama, that would be good.”
