MY OH MY ‘Long overdue!’ beg Coronation Street fans as they plead for iconic villain to return after 20 years off screen
Following a twenty year absence, fans think it’s now time for a comeback
FANS of Coronation Street have been left begging for an iconic character for one show villain after 20 years off screen.
Die hard fans of the ITV soap opera have been pleading for so-called Mad Maya Sharma to come back and cause chaos on the Street.
Maya appeared on the show as a lover of Dev Alahan for just over a year but certainly managed to create an impact during her short stint on the programme.
Played by actress Sasha Behar, the role saw her bag the 2005 British Soap Award for Best Villain thanks to her chaotic personality.
Maya was locked in a vicious feud with Dev’s wife Sunita and eventually did not stop at anything to extract her revenge.
In her most memorable scene, she tied Dev and Sunita up in the flat above the shop before creating a gas explosion in a bid to harm the pair.
She famously said to Dev that if he believed in reincarnation then he better hope he would come back as something better before the shop and the flat was engulfed in flames.
Writing on X – formerly Twitter – one fan wrote of Maya: “Bonkers solicitor with a penchant for bigamy, arson and nasty vases.
“Just the right side of OTT but never less than entertaining. Very memorable exit and long overdue a return.”
Another penned of the legendary character: “She really made her memorable! Would love a return.”
A third said: “She was brilliant. Smiling, sly, and dangerous. Thoroughly enjoyed her performance and was sad to see her go.
“I thought the actress was great as was the character. She really stood out for me.”
Before a fourth commented: “20 years after her departure it’s definitely time for a return.”
As a fifth added: “Fabulous character would love her to come back attempting to rebuild relationships and to try to be a reform character but then wreak havoc some more!”
She was last seen on screen when she was involved in a car accident while fleeing the scene of the explosion.
Having recovered in intensive care, she was kept in custody before being jailed for her crimes.
Little is known about her current whereabouts although she is believed to have been released from prison.
Since her stint on the Street, former show star Sasha has enjoyed a slew of episodic guest roles in a variety of major British shows including Casualty, Lewis and Doctor Who.
She has also appeared in Luther and Holby City as well as having a voice role in animated series Fireman Sam since 2021.
