Yellowjackets

October Is a Huge Month for Yellowjackets Fans Amid the Long Wait for Season 3

Exciting news has been revealed for Yellowjackets fans. Netflix has announced that the first season is coming to Netflix in the United States on Oct. 1, finally allowing subscribers of the streaming platform a chance to dive into the series.

As a post by Netflix on X stated while sharing the official poster for Season 1, “You won’t be hungry much longer. Yellowjackets Season 1 is coming to Netflix in the US on October 1!

Per Netflix, the official description of the series’ first season reads, “The twisty thriller series chronicles a high school girl’s soccer team whose trip to the national championship goes terribly wrong when their plane crashes, leaving them stranded in the wild. In the world of teenage girls, the social ladder reigns supreme — but the wilderness has its own set of rules, and they’ll have to put their differences aside if they hope to survive.”

The series was created by Ashley Lyle, Bart Nickerson, and Jonathan Lisco. While the show draws some inspiration from the Flight 571 tragedy of 1972, which saw nearly 30 people left stranded after a plane crash in the Andes mountains, Yellowjackets is also partly inspired by Lord of the Flies. Specifically, Lyle was intrigued after learning about a planned Lord of the Flies remake that would have followed young girls instead of boys stranded on an island. Though that project wound up stalling, the idea stuck with Lyle, evolving into the story idea for Yellowjackets.

Yellowjackets takes place in different timelines, with one exploring what happens with the survivors of a crash in 1996, along with how they are holding up in the present day, decades after the events. A strong cast has been assembled for both timelines, with the 1996 timeline actors including Sophie Nelisse, Sophie Thatcher, Samantha Hanratty, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Courtney Eaton, Liv Hewson, Ella Purnell, and Kevin Alves, among others. The modern day cast includes Melanie Lynskey, Juliette Lewis, Christina Ricci, Tawny Cypress, Warren Kole, and Rukiya Bernard.

The series first premiered on Showtime in November 2021. It was a very big hit, earning several nominations at the Primetime Emmy Awards. After drawing such high praise and strong viewership, the series was renewed, and Season 2 would later debut in March 2023. Showtime had renewed the show already ahead of Season 2, and the third seaosn is now in development. It’s not yet known when the third season will debut, but beyond that it’s expected to arrive in 2025.

Yellowjackets hits Netflix on Oct. 1, 2024, and fans are still waiting for a release date to be announced for the third season on Showtime.
