Doctor Who

One Heartbreaking Similarity Ncuti Gatwa Shares With The Doctor

There’s no doubt, Whovians are up for a treat with series 14.

As November approaches, Doctor Who fans around the world are getting more and more excited about the comeback of the iconic sci-fi show.

As Doctor Who celebrates its 60th anniversary, November will see the release of 3 special episodes starring David Tennant as the 14th Doctor, but the show’s gifts to its fans won’t stop there.

Right after David Tennant’s brief (but certainly memorable) comeback, another Doctor will be introduced. Ncuti Gatwa would take over as the 15th Doctor for a full two series of adventures through time and space.

To say that Whovians were excited to welcome the young actor into the Doctor Who family would be an understatement. Not only is Ncuti Gatwa already known and loved by many for his role as Eric Effiong in Netflix’ hit Sex Education, but he’ll also be the first Black actor to portray the Doctor.

In his recent interview with Rolling Stone UK, Gatwa opened up about what makes him feel much closer to his character than he ever thought:

“This person survived a genocide. This person fits in everywhere and nowhere. I am the Doctor. The Doctor is me. I decided that I had to get this role,” the actor said.

Although many people wouldn’t find this fact of the Doctor’s biography relatable, for Ncuti Gatwa it’s the part that connects him to the character on a very special emotional level.

As a child, the actor and his family had to flee their home country of Rwanda because of the genocide against the Tutsi minority.

They found a part and managed to build a life in Scotland, but the feeling of being a stranger in this community must have never left.

Fortunately, Ncuti Gatwa now has a chance to not only bring that feeling to the big fan-favorite character but also become a source of support for someone who might find themselves in a similar situation.

After all, sometimes having someone who understands is all we need to get through the hard times.

If you want to see Ncuti Gatwa take over Doctor Who as the 15th Doctor, tune in to BBC and Disney Plus this winter. Stay tuned for all the latest news and behind-the-scenes updates!
