Two Coronation Street legends sign new contracts after promise of an ‘exciting year’
Coronation Street’s Sam Robertson and Sue Devaney have signed on the dotted line for another year as Adam Barlow and Debbie Webster.
That means we’ll be seeing a lot more of everyone’s favourite solicitor with the incredible weave and the camp hotelier in upcoming scenes.
Adam, the son of cockney factory owner Mike Baldwin (Johnny Briggs) first appeared on our screens in 2001 – though he looked a little different then, as future Marvel actor Iain De Caestecker originated the role.
After his mum’s death in a horrific car accident caused by Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank), another example of retroactively changing the continuity of the programme, he went to boarding school and later returned with a new face… now of course being portrayed by Sam.
He continued in the role until 2007 when he moved away with uncle Peter (Chris Gascoyne) to open a bookies, and rejoined on a regular basis in 2016 after grandad Ken’s (William Roache) stroke.
Adam has been a main-player in the ITV soap over the last couple of years, having been entwined in the goings on of gangster Damon Hay (Ciaran Griffiths), who had an affair with his wife Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien).
The two separated and for a short while it looked like a romance was blossoming with his colleague Alya Nazir (Sair Khan), and he was left disappointed when she moved to Ireland to take on a new job.
Now it looks like the iconic character is set for further turmoil (and hopefully some joy) at the hands of the Coronation Street storyliners, with Sam extending his time on the serial for an extra year.
‘Everyone was so happy Sam agreed to stay another year – they’ve got some good storylines in the pipeline for his character so it’s going to be an exciting year’ a source told The Sun.
The publication was also told similar news about Sue Devaney: ‘Sue was delighted to sign a new contract earlier this year. She never expected to return to Corrie after 30-odd years away, but it really does feel like home five years later.’
‘Bosses have made it clear that Debbie is an essential character on the cobbles and there are big things coming up for her. Her hotel set has been given a big money revamp, which shows how central Debbie will be going forward.’
Sue first arrived as Debbie alongside dad Bill (Peter Armitage) when the Webster clan were expanded in 1984. Her brother Kevin (Michael Le Vell) first arrived the previous year, with the family settling into No. 11 after Elsie Tanner’s (Pat Phoenix) departure.
After just 34 episodes, she departed the following year when Armitage decided not to renew his contract.
She was frequently mentioned over the next thirty years, though wouldn’t reappear until 2019 when she came back to Weatherfield to break the news of her aunt’s death and hand Kevin some inheritance money.
Since then she’s become a firm-favourite amongst fans, successfully acquiring a lucrative hotel business from dodgy Ray Crosby (Mark Frost) and cosied up with new fella Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan).
We can’t wait to see more of her on our screens!
