Varley Is Bridgerton’s Most Underrated Character: Here’s Why She Deserves Better
Enough already with all the Polin stuff!
Waiting for the release of Bridgerton season 3 was pretty painful, but now that we’ve watched the new chapter thoroughly (some of us even several times), it’s fair to talk about something other than just the sex scenes of the season.
Yes, they finally gave us what we’ve wanted all these years since Season 1 premiered, but it’s far from the only thing that’s brilliant about the show. Creating compelling secondary characters is where the Bridgerton creators excel. And one of them is definitely Mrs. Varley.
Mrs. Varley is the housekeeper of the Featherington family and one of the most beloved minor characters. The way she is trusted by the ladies of the family is truly fascinating and incomprehensible. Anyone would have left the household where money is a problem, but she stayed loyal.
“Yes, the trusted servant is an established trope, but rarely do the employers confide in them, more often they just don’t care if they hear what you talk about. And Varley was likely one of the better paid staff – even a longtime member could face the axe when money gets tight and Portia is ruthless enough,” Redditor mjg66 said.
Apart from that, there are many things that make Varley an amazing person. For example, it was she who discovered Marina’s true intentions and pregnancy in season 1. It was Varley who forged the document that gave the Featherington title and estate to the family’s first-born grandson and protected the house in a way she wasn’t even expected to.
And the little thing from season 3 that just made us go “awwww” for five minutes. When planning the ball, Philippa said she wanted bugs for it. And while that confused viewers, Varley got it right: she understood that the young girl meant butterflies and got them for the ball. Isn’t that sweet?
Well, we think a spinoff about Varley, even a short one, would be a great thing. Dive deeper into her backstory, maybe learn about her and Portia’s life before they got married.
But until we get one, maybe it’s time to rewatch all three seasons of Bridgerton on Netflix and try to notice every little act of kindness Varley showed the Featherington’s.
