Usually stripped of all the actions of modern parties, technology, and speed, the shows hold viewers’ attention in a different way. They may be slow in their pursuits, but they are always looking for ways to enhance their status.
In the world of aristocracy, when you already have money and your family name to protect you, the most powerful tool is information. Knowing what goes on behind closed doors can give you more power and place you even higher than the rest of your social circle.
In the world of the underclass, however, money is everything. Once you have some, you have the opportunity to move up and join the upper class, but you won’t usually be welcomed without resistance.
A smart person is one who knows how both worlds work and tries to make the best of it. And one of the smartest characters in The Gilded Age has to be Mrs. Enid Winterton, as she has witnessed what can happen in both cases with her own eyes.
What Is Mrs. Winterton Plotting
Having worked for both New York “old money” and “new money,” Enid has learned the difference. She saw how eager Bertha Russell was to become a part of the real high society and learn her way into it. She quickly grows to dislike Bertha and tries to seduce her husband.
Later, in season 2 of the show, we find out that she ended up with a wealthy older widower, Joshua Winterton. Although Enid’s position in the world is much higher than Bertha’s, she ends up in a very similar position, making her way from a maid to a proper lady in New York and Newport society.
She is obviously moving up the same ladder as Bertha, and she plans to win that race. Redditors on r/GildedAgeHBO seem to agree. However, there is another interesting idea that may even override the usual enemy story.
“I’d LOVE to see Turner and Mrs. Russell team up together against a bigger ‘enemy’, like Mrs. Astor or even aunt Agnes if it made enough sense. I just love imagining these two <..> grit their teeth and decide to work together for a goal greater than their dislike for each other. I mean, they would made a formidable team,” Redditor enjoyt0day said.
It is quite hard to imagine any of those women giving up their ambitions and just working together. However, if there is anything that could help them get themselves a place under the sun of the higher society, and move “old money” ladies to the side, that would only be the joined forces.
