‘The Rookie’ Star Nathan Fillion Reveals John and Bailey’s Relationship May Hit a Rough Patch

LAPD Mid-Wilshire’s favorite couple are about to experience a surprising shakeup.

The Rookie loves to give us twists and turns … and it looks like Nathan Fillion is teasing one that involves none other than his character, John Nolan.

The hit ABC series is currently airing season 7 every Tuesday night, and fans are aware that John’s relationship with his wife Bailey Nune (Jenna Dewan) has experienced a few rough patches. Amid Bailey coming back to Los Angeles from a stint in the National Guard reserves, her abusive ex-husband Jason Wyler (Steve Kazee) was on the loose after making an escape from prison at the end of season 6. But after the two weathered that storm in their relationship, Nathan teased to TV Insider that it looks like something more is in the works for this longtime couple.

As Nathan explained to the outlet, while John and Bailey’s relationship looks pretty good from the outside, a new obstacle may shake things up a little bit.

“I think the job and his marriage are going really, really well,” he teased. “It’s not always smooth, but I think it’s incredibly healthy. I think this is a very healthy relationship … What I think is going to be refreshing is, I don’t think you’re going to be right about what they are upset about. I think there’s a surface [issue] there that I was expecting, and I think what’s really going on runs a little deeper.”

Well, that doesn’t give us too much about what’s to come! While we don’t know what’s next in John and Bailey’s future, Nathan did acknowledge how much he enjoys working alongside Jenna on these major The Rookie storylines.

What’s more, he shares that the two just have a way of feeding off one another while filming that brings them (and subsequently, the audience) more reasons to fall in love with the fictional married duo.

“Something that I can say I appreciate [about] working with Jenna is she’s very sharp and understands how to be in the moment,” he added. “Something will occur to me right in the middle of everything, and I’ll do something new every time. And she’s right there. She is right there with me. You can’t catch her off guard.”
