9-1-1: Lone Star Just Began a ‘Beautiful’ Storyline for Tommy, With a ‘Character-Defining Arc’ Still to Come

From Tommy and Trevor’s first meeting under a cloud of raining frogs to the time she defended their relationship in front of his entire church, it’s never a dull moment for the 9-1-1: Lone Star couple — and they’re about to embark on their biggest adventure yet.

Monday’s episode, a continuation of the final season’s three-part premiere, found Tommy getting down on one knee and asking Trevor to make her a preacher’s wife. “Trevor Parks, what would you say if I asked you to be my husband?” she said, to which he replied, “I’d say yes… but there’s just one small thing.”

That “small thing,” as it turns out, is much larger than advertised: If Trevor decides to marry Tommy, his bride-to-be must be approved by his ex-wife, who can revoke their custody agreement if she doesn’t deem Tommy fit to be Trevor’s daughter’s stepmother. In a particularly powerful moment, Tommy tells Trevor that she doesn’t want her own daughters subjected to an inquisition from a total stranger, placing their wellbeing above her own happiness.

“This is Tommy’s Casablanca episode, and she is Humphrey Bogart,” co-showrunner Rashad Raisani tells TVLine, adding that “there are definitely some twists and turns to come” in this situation, which he calls a “beautiful story.”

“Gina Torres is a Ferrari,” Raisani says. “Her talent is immense, and this season we just went all in on letting her go. She really takes the ball in Episodes 3 and 4, and then we have an even bigger storyline for her that starts to kick off in Episode 6. That will be her character-defining arc for this season — and perhaps the series. Many big things are coming for her character this season.”

Elsewhere in Season 5, Episode 2…

* Still unable to choose Judd’s replacement, Owen decides to judge Paul and Marjan based on recent test scores — which results in an incredibly unhelpful tie. Meanwhile, Wyatt unsuccessfully attempts to get Judd his job back, while Judd strongly considers taking a new gig as a trucker.

* In this week’s installment of Where In the World Is Grace Ryder?, Judd calls his wife to weigh the pros and cons of his newest job prospect, but he’s unable to reach her.

* The 126 responds to a massive train derailment, and while they’re able to save several people, they should probably start worrying more about themselves — the episodes ends with an overturned tanker releasing hazardous chemicals into the air, which will come to casually be referred to as a “poison cloud of death.”
