Amidst rumors that 9-1-1: Lone Star might be facing cancellation, FOX released an action-packed first look at the upcoming Season 5. Who dies in 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5?
We’re not entirely sure, but in the Season 5 premiere, the 126 squad will face their biggest and most high-stakes emergency yet. A promo for the episode was shared on X (formerly Twitter) on July 2, and it shows the team dealing with a hazardous train derailment. In the clip, the train seemingly takes out a wedding venue and later explodes, sending one of the 126 members flying into the air. The clip then cuts to team leader Owen Strand (Rob Lowe), who says into his radio: “Dispatch we have a problem.” While all of this is happening, a narrator states: “The epic new season of 9-1-1: Lone Star will be off the rails.”
It’s difficult to tell which team member was impacted by the blast, but he or she might not be the only one who’s life is at risk. Elsewhere in the promo, firefighter Marjan Marwani (Natacha Karam) yells at her team to “evacuate the area” as she stands in front of a flaming oil tank.
9-1-1: Lone Star has never shied away from tragedy in the past. In fact, the Season 4 finale featured not one, but two heartbreaking deaths — the death of Carlos’ (Rafael L. Silva) father and Owen’s brother. If this is the final season, there’s even more reason to make a dramatic impact by ending a character’s story tragically.
We already know that Sierra McClain will not be back for Season 5, and fans are worried that her character, 9-1-1 dispatcher Grace Ryder, will be killed off. “If they kill her character I’m out,” one fan commented on the promo. While Grace wouldn’t be at the frontlines of train wreck, it’s not impossible for her to meet a tragic demise. After all, she is the wife of firefighter Judd Ryder (Jim Parrack) and the pair have a great relationship, so we can’t picture her just leaving town or moving away.
Several other fans noted how sad they are about McClain leaving, with one fan commenting: “It won’t be the same without Grace.” Another fan added: “How can we watch this season without Grace 😥.”

During a May 2024 interview with TV Insider, Lowe, who also serves as an executive producer, kept mum about what fans can expect in the season premiere, but he did promise that viewers will be “blown away.”
“Just the scale and spectacle of the train derailment and the arduousness of shooting it,” he told the outlet. “I mean, I love it. I find it really challenging. I love the challenge of it, but it is a brutal, backbreaking grind … But I love the results of it. I love how big it looks. It looks like a movie. Yeah, I think people are going to be blown away.”
As for the show’s future, FOX has not officially pulled the plug, but several cast members have indicated that Season 5 could be the final season. “Eight more shooting days left after five years on a show is a wild feeling,” Karam recently wrote on her Instagram Story. “So much change on the horizon,” she added, along with a broken heart emoji. “So excited to be a part of @911lonestar’s final season!! What a ride it’s been!” Robin Lively, who recurs as Judd’s estranged baby mama, wrote in a since-deleted post.
