9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5’s New Image Reveals First Look At Supernatural Star In A Very Apt Role

A new image from 9-1-1: Lone Star season 5 reveals a first look at Supernatural star Richard Speight Jr. in an upcoming episode. The FOX series, a spinoff of the hit procedural 9-1-1, follows Austin-based firefighters led by the resilient Owen Strand (Rob Lowe). The midseason premiere, titled “All Who Wander,” is set to release on January 20. Known for his portrayal of the archangel Gabriel and Loki, Speight Jr. was a recurring character on Supernatural starting in season 2, going on to appear in a total of 12 episodes. He also appeared in the spinoff series The Winchesters as Loki.

Now, TVInsider has released a first-look image of Speight Jr. as Reverend Phil in the midseason premiere of 9-1-1: Lone Star. Speight Jr.’s Reverend will be a key figure in supporting Judd (Jim Parrack), who has been drinking to cope after his wife Grace (Sierra McClain) took a temporary leave to volunteer with Mercy Ships. The photo shows Speight Jr. leading a faith-based sobriety group that both Judd and Owen attend. Take a look below:

What Richard Speight Jr.’s Role In 9-1-1: Lone Star Means

Speight Jr.’s arrival as Reverend Phil in 9-1-1: Lone Star coincides with a climactic moment for Judd, whose battle with addiction was revealed in December’s midseason finale. After learning that he’d been secretly drinking to cope with his wife’s absence, Owen made a life-altering decision. Abandoning his plan to take a job in New York and leave Judd in charge of the 126, Owen decides to stay with his team and accompany Judd to sobriety meetings—a choice that sets the stage for this emotional arc before Lone Star’s series finale.

Co-showrunner Rashad Raisani described the upcoming episode as a deep dive into the power of addiction, noting, “It’s just beginning. It’s not over.” This marks a departure for 9-1-1: Lone Star, a series traditionally centered on different high-stakes emergencies per episode, as it shifts focus to a deeply personal multi-episode storyline for one of Lone Star’s most beloved characters. Reverend Phil’s faith-based approach may provide Judd with a new perspective on his heartbreak, showing that even the strongest heroes need help sometimes.

Our Take On 9-1-1: Lone Star’s Latest Guest Star

Speight Jr. joining 9-1-1: Lone Star as Reverend Phil is an inspired addition. As a complement to the show’s renewed focus on emotional storytelling, Speight Jr.’s talent for portraying layered characters, like the trickster Norse god Loki, is set to enhance the exploration of Judd’s deeply personal struggle. This casting not only brings added gravitas to Judd’s arc but also offers exciting crossover appeal for Supernatural fans. Before the firefighters of the 126 face their asteroid disaster, Owen of 9-1-1: Lone Star will ensure his team receives the support they need to rebuild and come back stronger than ever.
