‘9-1-1: Nashville’ Star, 48, Shares an Intriguing Filming Update for the New Spin-Off

Production is now in full swing for 9-1-1: Nashville, the highly anticipated spin-off of 9-1-1, and one cast member is having quite a swell time on set. The series, set in the heart of the country music capital, marks a return to ABC for Jessica Capshaw, best known for her role as Dr. Arizona Robbins on Grey’s Anatomy. This time, Capshaw takes on a very different character, playing horse enthusiast Blythe, the wife of Captain Don Sharpe (portrayed by Chris O’Donnell), who leads Nashville’s busiest fire station, 113. In a recent update, Capshaw shared that filming, now in its sixth week, is going smoothly. If her revelations are anything, it’s safe to say audiences will be treated to a strong and entertaining dynamic among the ensemble.

Capshaw recently appeared on the Call It What It Is podcast hosted by her former Grey’s Anatomy co-star, Camilla Luddington, who herself is gearing up to return for Season 22 of the medical drama. Their conversation included the new 9-1-1 spin-off, and Capshaw shared details of what her filming experience with her co-stars is like. “My first work was with Michael, and I adore him,” the actress said of Michael Provost, who plays her son, Ryan, on the show. “I feel so, so lucky to have such a talented and kind and just awesome person to work with.” She further revealed, adding, “Right now, this show is mostly on location, so we’re always in different places.”

Capshaw also spoke about her working relationship with O’Donnell, with whom she previously starred in the Grey’s Anatomy spin-off Private Practice. “I adore [him] and have known him for a really long time,” she said. “I remember feeling like a baby actress, and I remember feeling like he was not a baby actor. He was accomplished, and I’d seen so many movies he’d done that I love so much.” The actress went on to name the 1995 romantic drama Circle of Friends as one of her favorite O’Donnell films, saying, “I remember [it] being super romantic… It has Normal People vibes. He’s so charming. He’s just super charming, and he’s very funny and a real professional.”

Given that the spin-off is set in Nashville, it is expected that music will play an integral role in the new series. The fact that the show will also feature country star LeAnn Rimes is enough to prove that there will be a lot of crooning in this one. Though details of Rimes’ role remain a mystery, it’s known that her character will be a mother, and it appears she’ll share a close relationship with Capshaw’s Blythe, as the actress also revealed on the podcast that she’s already filmed some scenes with Rimes. Might we get a duet between these two? Fingers crossed, after all, Capshaw earlier revealed that she “would looove to” sing on the show.

Capshaw further expressed deep admiration for Rimes and her work ethic as well as other co-stars, adding, “And so I’m already completely, completely in love with Juani [Feliz] and Hailey [Hailey Kilgore] and Hunter [McVey].” As for what to expect from the spin-off, the actress added: “We have these two worlds happening where there’s this emotional life and this family, and then you have the squad, you have the firefighters, and we actually have had such great occasion to intermingle.”
