Crowley Is Actually Lucifer – Good Omens Theory Explained
Good Omens never says which Angel Crowley was before his fall from heaven, and many theorize that Crowley could be Lucifer, the Prince of Hell.
A Good Omens theory suggests that Crowley is actually Lucifer, Prince of Hell, and he just is not aware of his true identity anymore. Good Omens has so far spanned two seasons following demon Crowley and angel Aziraphale as they navigate an unlikely friendship, and potential relationship, on Earth. Based on Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s novel of the same name, Gaiman adapted Good Omens for television in 2019. Pieces of Aziraphale and Crowley’s history have been revealed throughout Good Omens but there is still a lot left unknown about the unearthly duo.
David Tennant and Michael Sheen star as Crowley and Aziraphale in Good Omens and are joined by Jon Hamm (Gabriel), Frances McDormand (God), Doon Mackichan (Archangel Michael), and Anna Maxwell Martin (Beelzebub) who are a few of the opposing sides of Heaven and Hell. Good Omens’s season 3 has yet to be confirmed, although Gaiman has confirmed it has been planned and plotted. However, with the SAG-AFTRA strikes currently taking place, it may be a while before more information about Crowley and Aziraphale can be revealed.
Good Omens “Crowley Is Lucifer” Theory Explained
Good Omens is slowly revealing more about who Crowley and Aziraphale are, but one theory suggests that Crowley may be a different demon entirely, Lucifer. One scene in season 2 of Good Omens shows Aziraphale and Crowley meeting when they are both Angels when Crowley is helping to design and create the universe, but Crowley never reveals his Angel name. The lack of knowledge about who Crowley is has raised theories about him being Lucifer as Lucifer has not been seen in Good Omens so far.
The Good Omens season 3 theory suggests Crowley is Lucifer and has since been using the pseudonym Crowley to hide his identity, or more likely because he has forgotten who he was. Good Omens season 2 showed Gabriel’s memory being wiped when he was demoted from Archangel, which could be what happened to Crowley. After the rebellion in Heaven, which Lucifer was a ringleader for, he was cast out from Heaven and his memories wiped, leaving him believing he is Crowley.
All The Evidence To Suggest Crowley Is Actually Lucifer
Crowley’s lack of an Angel name is not the only reason that many believe he is Lucifer. When creating the universe in season 2, Crowley says “Let there be light” and Lucifer translates to “light-bringer”. More convincingly are Crowley’s actions throughout time which are credited to Lucifer. Firstly, Crowley is shown to be the serpent in the Garden of Eden who tempts Eden with the apple when usually it is Lucifer or Satan who is the reason behind the Fall of Man. Also, in season 1, episode 3, it is revealed that Crowley tempted Jesus into the desert and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, another action usually credited to Lucifer.
Plus, Good Omens has consistently shown that Crowley was a powerful Angel before his fall. He is able to easily access Heaven’s interface in season 2, episode 6 with his old passwords, something only a more superior Angel is able to do. When Shax questions him about the powerful angelic miracle in season 2, episode 1, Crowley responds “How’d you know I didn’t do it?” suggesting he once had the power of a high-ranking Angel, just like Lucifer. It is possible his memory of being Lucifer was wiped when he was cast out of Heaven, but plenty of his power still remains.
Neil Gaiman Has Debunked The Crowley/Lucifer Theory
Crowley being Lucifer is a very convincing theory, and one that would definitely provide a shock twist in Good Omens season 3, but the theory has been debunked by Neil Gaiman himself. Addressing the popular “Crowley is Lucifer” theory, Gaiman explains how Crowley is just Crowley and debunks the theory by pointing out how Crowley has mentioned Lucifer. Crowley “talks about hanging out with Lucifer and the boys when he’s getting drunk in the pub in season 1”. Since Crowley is drunk and complaining about his past choices, Gaiman explains that it would be really strange for him to refer to himself as Lucifer in the third person.
Gaiman does, however, confirm that there is a much deeper history to Crowley’s story that has not been revealed yet. Crowley was evidently an Angel with a high ranking, especially if he was hanging around with God’s favorite Lucifer, and another theory suggests Crowley may even be Archangel Raphael. There will most certainly be some big revelations about his past in Good Omens season 3 which could make his fall from Heaven even worse. With Aziraphale reinstated and promoted to Archangel, it may not be long before he finds out who Crowley truly is in Good Omens season 3.
