Report: The SandmNetflix’s The Sandman will reportedly introduce four new characters from Greek mythology in Neil Gaiman’s highly-anticipated Season 2.an Season 2 to Include More Mythological Gods

The Sandman creator Neil Gaiman might be looking to adapt more mythological gods into the next installment of Netflix’s hit fantasy series.

Following the casting rumors about Thor, Loki, and Odin’s inclusion in the highly-anticipated Season 2, it seems like Netflix has reportedly enlisted four actors to portray gods from Greek mythology. According to What’s on Netflix, Greek gods Hades and Persephone are rumored to appear in the next chapter of Morpheus’ story, along with Eurydice, who is Apollo’s nymph daughter. Another important Greek mythology character whose Season 2 has been heavily speculated is Orpheus, the son of Morpheus and Calliope. These four characters’ live-action appearance would perfectly set up Gaiman’s “The Song of Orpheus” story, which was a special issue of The Sandman comic series published in 1991.

The Sandman fans got their first glimpse of Morpheus and Calliope’s relationship in Episode 11 of Season 1, where Dream reunites with his former lover after finding out that she’s been imprisoned by a greedy author. During their reunion, they briefly discussed grieving over their son Orpheus’ tragic death. Should Season 2 indeed adapt “The Song of Orpheus,” fans of the Netflix series would get to learn more about Orpheus, and his doomed romance with Eurydice.

In addition to “The Song of Orpheus,” recent rumors also suggest that The Sandman Season 2 might also cover the “Brief Lives” arc from the comics, which would center around another one of Dream’s Endless siblings, Delirium. The said arc features Delirium enlisting Dream’s help to find their long-lost brother Destruction. Interestingly, the story also shows Dream finally coming to terms with his role in his son Orpheus’ tragic fate.

The Sandman Season 2 Production Delayed

Like most of Hollywood’s major productions, filming on The Sandman Season 2 was temporarily suspended due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. However, prior to the actors strike, it was confirmed that Netflix had already started shooting in the UK, due to set photos featuring Tom Sturridge in his character’s signature all-black outfit. Also captured in the set photos was an unidentified man in an all-white costume, who fans believed might be Orpheus. Because of the delay, there is currently no target release date set for the show’s return. However, Netflix executive Peter Friedlander previously hinted at their plans to change the future seasons’ episode release format.

The Sandman is created by Gaiman, David S. Goyer, and Allan Heinberg, based on Gaiman’s popular DC Comics series with Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg. Season 1 centered around Sturridge’s Morpheus/ Dream, a godlike being, who, after being held captive by a human for over a hundred years, has finally returned to his kingdom, which has become something he couldn’t recognize anymore. In order to restore the full strength of his magic, he must recollect all the items that were stolen from him during his captivity. Apart from Sturridge, the series also stars Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death, Mason Alexander Park as Desire, Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne, and Donna Preston as Despair.
