Doctor Who’s Millie Gibson Teases Different Chemistry Between 15th Doctor and New Companion
Gibson reveals ‘cliquey’ dynamic between Ruby Sunday and Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor in upcoming Doctor Who episodes.
A new team will control the TARDIS when Ncuti Gatwa’s 15th Doctor debuts with Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday. Ahead of the highly anticipated Doctor Who Christmas special, Gibson hinted at a new dynamic between the pair that is very different from relationships with previous companions.
“She is very cool. I’ve said this before, but I think her dynamic with the Doctor is very much like two girls at school gossiping,” Gibson said in the 2024 preview issue of Total Film. “They’re very cliquey. I think the Doctor’s not had that sort of dynamic before. It’s really beautiful to see come alive when you do watch it. She’s a cool chick, you know? I’m not sure how much I can say, but I’m very, very excited for people to see her. She’s very different to my character in Coronation Street, which was so much fun to play. And I love her clothes. I love what she wears, and obviously, the episodes where we go back to different eras, which is super fun.”
The official Doctor Who social media platforms recently released two photos for the holiday special titled “The Church on Ruby Road.” The first image captures Gatwa’s 15th Doctor in a foreboding stance in falling snow, while the second shows the Doctor and his new companion sharing a bonding moment. Fans noted a subtle suggestion in the images, speculating that the duo might be tied up against their will, possibly hinting at the storyline of the upcoming episode.
Fans Eagerly Await Ncuti Gatwa’s Take on Doctor Who
Former Doctor Who star John Barrowman previously shared his thoughts on the new version of the iconic time-traveling hero. “Ncuti, I think, will be absolutely wonderful and should bring a different dynamic and energy to it,” the actor said. “The excitement will still be there, obviously,” he added, emphasizing his confidence in the new cast. When asked if he would ever return to the series, Barrowman said, “If I’m asked back, I will do it at the drop of a hat because I love the show.”
The 2023 Doctor Who Christmas special marks the show’s return to a festive episode format, the first since 2017 when Peter Capaldi portrayed the Time Lord. Despite a recent shift to New Year’s Eve specials by former showrunner Chris Chibnall, writer Russell T Davies brought back the holiday tradition. The first Christmas special dates back to 1965, coinciding with the “The Daleks’ Master Plan” storyline.
