Actors Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev were catapulted to global stardom thanks to their award-winning roles as Damon Salvatore and Elena Gilbert on The Vampire Diaries.
Damon and Elena, whom fans have nicknamed Delena, are undoubtedly one of the two most popular ships of the entire series.
And while they were working on bringing their fictional love story to life, real feelings developed between the two outside the hit supernatural drama. But while they may have been endgame in the series, the two actors split up off-camera after season 4. So, after the show came to an end, the burning question on everyone’s mind was whether their friendship survived.
After meeting on the set of TVD and becoming friends, the two famously dated for several years, which was a dream come true for millions of fans. However, much to the disappointment of those who wanted to see them together, the two actors ended up going their separate ways in 2013. The real re ason behind the couple’s split is unknown, but they carried on as good friends, despite portraying love interests on-screen.
Dobrev herself revealed to E! News that they didn’t call it quits because they weren’t friends or didn’t have love for each other, or because of some terrible event.
In fact, she stated that the love, friendship and care were still there. “Yes, we’re professional and that’s fine. We were friends long before we dated and we still are now,” she added.
Dobrev left the show after 6 seasons but made a brief return in the big finale, which she thought was an awesome and satisfying ending. “For me, it was great because I got to go back and be a part of the finale, say goodbye and pay homage to the characters. So, I was really happy with it, for sure,” she disclosed on Watch What Happens Live.
However, after the series officially wrapped up, fans were left wondering whether Dobrev and Somerhalder maintained their friendship. As it turns out, there’s nothing to worry about because they are, in fact, still friends, and they even meet up for dinners with Somerhalder’s wife.
When Dobrev made an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen in 2019, a fan asked her if she thought it was weird that she was friends with both Somerhalder and his wife, to which she replied that she didn’t think it was weird, by any means.
“I think that’s great. Why can’t everyone be friends? I think they have a beautiful baby, and they are happy and so am I. What’s bad about that? I don’t see any problem with that,” she explained.
Dobrev and Somerhalder are a great example of how two people who were once in a relationship can move on amicably. And while it may seem strange to some fans, their friendship shows a lot of growth and maturity.
