Grammer’s Frasier Reboot Season 2 Cameo Hopes Can Fix Cheers’ Big Ending Disappointment

Kelsey Grammer has two particular cameo hopes for the Frasier reboot season 2, and if he could make it work, it could make up for the Cheers finale’s biggest disappointment. The first 10 episodes of the Frasier revival were focused on establishing Frasier Crane’s new life in Boston. Dubbed his final act, his decision to return to his old stomping grounds was motivated by wanting to reconnect with his grown-up son, Freddy. By the end of the Frasier reboot season 1, it seemed like the father and son were finally on good terms, allowing the show to move forward.

With Frasier’s personal and professional life in Boston now established, the revival can play around its storytelling. The Frasier reboot season 1 was infamous for having barely any references to the events of Cheers despite its titular character getting his start in the hit ’80s NBC sitcom. It hasn’t even revealed what happened to the underground pub that the then-snooty therapist frequented. That said, the Frasier reboot season 2 is in a better position to explore all that, and it seems like Grammer wants to do that with his hopes of bringing two of the most prominent characters from Cheers.

Grammer Wants Both Sam And Diane To Appear In Frasier Reboot Season 2

Production for the Frasier reboot season 2 has been quietly progressing, and so while Grammer couldn’t divulge spoilers, he reveals his plans of bringing back Shelley Long and Ted Danson as Sam and Diane. The actor and executive producer shares his narrative plans for both of them and considering that it is his show, their roles will serve Frasier’s story. Beyond that, however, the Paramount+ series can also make up for Sam and Diane’s disappointing fate in the Cheers finale. For context, despite their reunion and plans of getting back together, they ended up going their separate ways again.

While the Cheers finale is widely regarded as one of the best TV endings of all time, there’s still disappointment over Sam and Diane’s final fate. The foundation of the show’s success was rooted in their dynamic as it became the blueprint for an effective will-they/won’t-they romance. However, Long’s departure as Diane in the Cheers season 5 finale cut their story short. The series-ender was supposed to give the pair their happily-ever-after, but that didn’t happen after Sam decided to back out from his plans of joining Diane in Los Angeles.

Just like in Cheers , Grammer’s character can use his therapy skills to make the pair realize that they are meant to be together.

Both Danson and Long have reprised their Cheers roles in the original Frasier. However, they have never shared the screen since the Glen and Les Charles, and James Burrows-created sitcom wrapped up. The Frasier reboot season 2 could mark their reunion, which could lead to a much better send-off than the last time they were on the screen. Interestingly, Frasier’s involvement may be vital to them getting back together, if they haven’t in the last several years. Just like in Cheers, Grammer’s character can use his therapy skills to make the pair realize that they are meant to be together.

Why Sam And Diane Didn’t Get Together In The Cheers Finale

Diane returning to Cheers would have been the perfect way to deliver on its primary love line as the show ended. The only reason the writers moved away from their romance was because Long was leaving. However, after initially considering his ex-lover’s offer, Sam ultimately declined, opting to stay in Boston and continue running his pub and being around the people he spent his nights with. He realized that despite their attraction to each other, things wouldn’t have worked for them in the long run.

While that seemed like a good idea three decades ago, things may have changed for both Sam and Diane in the Frasier reboot season 2. Both may have finally matured and been through more life experiences that make them realize that they are indeed made to be together. In any case, there was no denying that they were mutually attracted to each other. For some reason, they just couldn’t make it work because they were both too stubborn.

How Diane And Sam Getting Back Together Impacts Frasier

In the original series, Frasier was open about how his experience with Diane seemingly traumatized him. Granted that Cheers only brought the character as a guest star, their break-up has resulted in years of trauma that may still have not been fully resolved. That said, if Frasier sees his friends ultimately have their happily ever after, perhaps, it could help him finally heal from what Diane did to him. Maybe, it could even inspire Frasier to look back at his past for any potential romance that may be ripe for rekindling in the Frasier reboot season 2.
