Grey’s Anatomy farewell: Why Midori Francis is leaving as Mika Yasuda after two seasons

Grey’s Anatomy’s Mika Yasuda will be one of the ABC medical drama’s surgical interns to leave in season 21 as it has been announced Midori Francis is exiting the role after two seasons

Grey’s Anatomy’s surgical intern Mika Yasuda, portrayed by Midori Francis, is set for a dramatic departure in season 21 of the ABC medical drama.

The official buzz is that Midori Francis is bowing out after a stint that saw Mika quickly become a fan favourite with her dark sense of humour.

Deadline reports the actress’s decision to leave is part of an “amicable” plan to pursue new creative avenues and coincides with her new representation deal with WME earlier this year.

Despite fans’ suspicion about what prompted the exit after only two seasons, it seems Francis’ career trajectory is looking up as she already has a project in post-production, a short film titled ‘My Only Friend Is A Robot Named Beans.

Francis isn’t the only talent departing; Jake Borelli, aka Levi Schmitt, is also departing after seven seasons.

The storyline leaves us wondering about Mika’s fate as she assists Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) in her recovery and navigates her romance with Benson Kwan (Harry Shum Jr), not to mention the potential loss of her cherished Chevy G10 “Leona”.

Before joining the cast of Grey’s Anatomy two years ago, Francis was known for her role as Lily in Netflix’s Dash and Lily, a performance that earned her a Daytime Emmy Award nomination.

She also appeared in the first season of MAX’s The Sex Lives Of College Girls as Alicia, Renee Rapp’s love interest.

Her other notable roles include appearances in The Birch, Afterlife Of The Party, Younger, Gotham and Robot Chicken.
