Power Book II: Ghost’s [Spoiler] Meets a Bloody End in Lead-Up to the Series Finale — Read Recap

Queens can’t rule forever. Case in point: In this week’s Power Book II: Ghost, the reign of Mary J. Blige’s Monet Tejada was brought to a sudden, bloody end.

With only one episode left before Power Book II: Ghost is no more, we guessed that a major character might not make it to the finale. And — in an hour otherwise filled with Cane and Noma’s wedding preparations — we were proven right.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Everything really was set in motion early in the hour when Diana and Dru realized that Carter and Noma, working together, sent Tariq and Monet to an abandoned amusement park in Staten Island to get gunned down by one of the Russians. D&D showed up in time to turn the situation on the Russians; after gunning them down, Monet and Tariq realized they’d been played. But they also realized that Noma and Carter likely believed they were dead, which bought Monet and Tariq time to think.

The pair, along with Brayden, Diana, Dru, Effie and Davis, devise a plan to take out Noma and Carter on Noma’s wedding day. Brayden, Effie and Tariq will ambush Carter at the church where he always goes to confess. The Tejadas, with Davis, will deal with Noma at her wedding reception.

Problem is: Carter easily shakes off Tariq’s attack, cuffing young St. Patrick and tossing him in the back of his car. The dirty cop then calls Noma to alert her that Monet is very much alive. Before he can get far, though, a coked-up Brayden rams into his car. When Carter wakes up, Brayden has him tied to a chair.

Back at the wedding reception, Noma uses her first dance as Mrs. Cane Tejada to demand that her new husband choose once and for all: his mother, or Noma’s organization. When he won’t disavow his family, Noma has him removed and restrained. Simultaneously, Dru and Diana are hauled out of the party to be killed… except Mama Tejada shows up and shoots the henchmen, freeing her children, and then the three of them go back inside to rescue Cane.

And that’s a good thing, because Noma is just about to murder her new husband when Monet busts into the room like she’s the lead in an action movie. There is so! much! shooting! Diana and Dru eventually get there to back up their mother; Cane, meanwhile, gets knocked over (still tied up) and he watches the melee from the floor. He’s horrified to see that, after Monet takes a bunch of bullets in the chest, she falls to the ground, bleeding.

“My babies,” she whispers after Dru and Diana finish off the rest of the gunmen and then rush to her side. “Wait!” Cane cries over and over, sobbing. But it’s too late: Monet is dead.
