Outlander’s Caitriona Balfe speaks out on s/e/x scene changes after major overhaul

Outlander has been a hit with fans since it first aired in 2014 thanks to its saucy /xe/x scenes, but lead actress Caitriona Balfe has opened up about a major change to how the series handles intimacy on screen

Caitriona Balfe, the star of the steamy TV drama series Outlander, has shared her insight into the show’s evolving handling of intimate scenes.

Now in its action-packed seventh season and with Balfe having both acted in and produced numerous episodes, she credits the addition of an intimacy coordinator as a transformative force for comfort on set.

At the ATX TV Festival, Balfe revealed her change of heart: “We’ve also started working with the most incredible intimacy co-ordinator and it’s amazing because I probably was one of the people like ‘I don’t think we need that, we’ve been doing this ourselves and figuring it out for a while.'”

Initially skeptical about the role, she now touts its worth, saying: “But actually I think it’s been so beneficial and it’s helped us, and there are other scenes with other characters, some I’ve been involved in, and some with our younger actors too.”

Highlighting the constructive effects, she added, “It helps you create the storytelling in a way where everybody’s on board, everybody knows exactly what’s happening, we’re all on the same page.”

Balfe related the approach to planning action sequences, finishing off with: “Just like you would do with fight co-ordination or whatever and it’s really helped,” reports the Irish Star.

“Vanessa (Coffey, the intimacy co-ordinator) is such an amazing addition to our family as well, she’s just been really great.”

Outlander enthusiasts, get ready for a thrill as Part 2 of season 7 premieres on November 22.
