How’d The Rookie Write Out Thorsen in Season 7 Premiere? Plus, Wesley Gets an Earful, #Chenford Makes a Wager
ABC’s The Rookie opened Season 7 down one familiar face, but added two new ones — and a fun #Chenford wager — to shake things up.
Where did things stand with each character as Season 7 opened, one day after Nolan (played by Nathan Fillion) returned to duty after being shot in the hindquarters in the May finale?
NOLAN got back on that horse maybe a bit sooner than he should have, after recuperating. And perhaps due to a lack of focus, he held back on taking a shot, during a pharmacy robbery, that might have kept a civilian from being shot/eventually dying. But a pep talk from GREY seemed to get him back on track; Grey by the way got bumped up to lieutenant in the wake of the corruption scandal/cleaning-of-house, though as he shared with The Rookie: Feds‘ GARZA, he feels a bit guilty about how he got the promotion.
Nolan nudged wife BAILEY to stay out of the country a bit longer, deployed with the National Guard, given that JASON (as well as OSCAR) remain in the wind after their season-ending prison breakout. MONICA also remains at large, having most recently evaded Interpol in Bolivia.
JUAREZ has started her final 30 days as a rookie (and is jazzed to be sporting short sleeves), though she is going it alone. We are told that an off-screen Aaron THORSEN transferred to North Hollywood, where Celia says he is “happy no one knows that he was a patient of Blair’s.” (Tru Valentino and the show parted ways over the summer, as the result of a creative decision.)
CHEN and BRADFORD are still split up, but bantering as good as ever — especially when Tim suggested a wager over who can train their rookie best. Tim is assigned to MILES aka “The Ringer” aka “Texas”, who is more than happy to tell you that he “technically isn’t a rookie” (having put in two years on a Texas police force), while Lucy aims to use a “more modern approach” when making her TO debut with SETH aka “The Virgin.” What were the new boots’ worst, Day 1 offenses? Seth hurled all over a crime scene after happening upon an OD victim who, he later shared, brought back memories of when he found a high school sweetheart similarly dead, whereas Miles irked Tim a full four times — including by joking that they “shoot out the tires” of a suspect they were chasing. (“Try to suck less” on Day 2 is Tim’s sage advice to MIles.) At episode’s end, Lucy and Tim concurred that Day 1 of the bet was a wash, after which Tim bid her a sweet goodnight. Elsewhere, we saw that Miles lives in his car, parked on a random street.
n the aftermath of the LAPD corruption uncovered last season, WESLEY has been assigned to make sure that the department continues “flying straight” (à la Elsbeth). Wife Angela LOPEZ offers to “cut a bitch” if anyone gives him gruff. In his new capacity as “hall monitor,” Wesley reviews tapes of officers’ sessions with Blair the compromised LAPD shrink. In one of the tapes, a Detective GRAHAM shares that he had a “dream that was even hotter than last time” — about “Detective Lopez.” “The things she did to me…. All I can think about is how much I want to–.” But Wesley slams off the tape right then and there, and later side-eyes Graham in the break room. Graham says he finds it “amazing” that Lopez didn’t “end up with a cop,” but built a family with Wesley. Afterward, bound by confidentiality, Wesley could only obliquely lament to Juarez about how one “can’t un-know what they know.” Come bedtime, he asked his wife if she is happy. Though a bit puzzled by the inquiry, Angela assured him, “In general, yes, I’m very happy.” After which, Wesley gladly accepted her offer to put down her Seduced by a Sniper airport novel and “fool around.”
Alas, not much HARPER in the season premiere, aside from being a part of the (failed) Jason takedown, apprising roll call of the manhunt status, and a few other lines. But rest assured, drama awaits her and husband JAMES next week…
