Supernatural Season 16 Could Become A Reality In 2025 – Thanks To A Promise Made 5 Years Ago

Based on a five-year-old promise, Supernatural season 16 could finally happen in 2025. After 327 episodes across fifteen seasons, Supernatural finally came to an end, breaking the hearts of many fans. Since then, a large portion of the fandom has longed for season 16, so they could return to the world and characters they love. The prequel, The Winchesters, helped fill the gap to a small degree, but it didn’t quite have the same impact. The timing was poor because fans didn’t have enough time to mourn the original show, so The Winchesters ended after a single season.
Periodically, rumors have popped up about a Supernatural miniseries or a 2-hour revival movie, though nothing has ever been confirmed. Fans have still held out hope it will eventually come back, launching online campaigns to revive the show. The hope is furthered by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, who have expressed a desire to play the beloved characters again if it’s done correctly. Luckily, Supernatural season 16 could finally become a reality this year if the studio and creative team uphold a promise made by Padalecki and Ackles five years ago.
According To Jared Padalecki, 2025 Was The Year Marked For A Potential Supernatural Revival
In the five years since Supernatural’s end, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles have expressed love for their characters, feeling certain they’ll one day play Sam and Dean again. However, Jared Padalecki revealed in an interview with CBR that they actually had a plan. When speaking about his show Walker, the question naturally came up whether he would play his Supernatural character again. Here’s what he said:
“The simple answer to your question is 100%. I will play Sam Winchester again. Jensen will play Dean Winchester again. It’s sort of a timing and availability thing. In hindsight, Jensen and I have always said “always,” if we ever have the option. I think in the last two or three seasons of Supernatural, when we realized somebody might want more, we said “2025. In 2020, we’re ending this. Let’s get together in five years and see what Sam and Dean are up to.”
This response proves that they knew fans would want to come back to Supernatural again and made a loose plan on how and when to make that happen. The actors likely thought five years would be long enough from the finale to feel like a revival would feel warranted while not being close enough for it to feel unnecessary. Unfortunately, Warner Bros and the rest of the creative team haven’t made any comments to affirm that they would uphold the promise from the two lead actors.
Jensen Ackles & Jared Padalecki Both Have Upcoming Projects Beyond Supernatural
When Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki made their promise about a 2025 revival, they didn’t necessarily foresee that their careers would continue to boom in the five years since the Supernatural ending. Ackles has three different upcoming projects that would take up his time. He plays Mark Meachum in Countdown and Soldier Boy in Vought Rising, both of which are currently in pre-production. Additionally, Ackles plays Soldier Boy/Ben in the cast of the popular anti-hero TV show The Boys – which is slated to return in 2026 for season 5, its final season.
Given the busy schedule of both actors, the likelihood of a 2025 Supernatural revival, in any form, looks pretty slim.
Jared Padalecki’s schedule isn’t quite as full as Ackles, but he does have an upcoming project that could take a lot of time and attention. He is teaming up with the Walker showrunner for an unnamed medical drama that would tell the story of a country doctor practicing unusual, improvisational medicine in rural Texas with a medical prodigy (via Cinemablend). He’s also rumored to be attached to a spinoff of Fire Country, in which he played Camden Casey.
Given the busy schedule of both actors, the likelihood of a 2025 Supernatural revival, in any form, looks pretty slim. The Winchester family actors would have to find a way to match up their schedules for filming. Even if they somehow worked things out so Padalecki and Ackles were both available, the network would have to get on board, and they’d have to pull together a creative team and story.
Why It’s Too Soon For A Supernatural Revival To Happen Yet
Although it might disappoint some fans that Supernatural probably won’t get revived in 2025, the lack of revival is for the best, at least for now. The idea of bringing the show back after just five years feels asinine due to the unbalanced ratio of time onscreen versus time offscreen. The show has only been offscreen for five years, and two of those years don’t feel like they count because productions halted because of the COVID-19 lockdown.
Supernatural coming back at this point would feel more like a long break between seasons rather than an actual revival. The show wouldn’t have the nostalgia factor that helps many revivals succeed. Rather than rushing to bring it back, the fantasy series should wait at least half the time the show was on the air, which is around 7.5 years, before providing fans with a revival, placing Supernatural season 16 in either 2027 or 2028.
