Doctor Who’s Millie Gibson Talks Ruby’s Future After Her Terrible Time in Latest Episode

Doctor Who just dropped an episode all about the Doctor’s former companion, Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) and how she’s recovering – and not – after leaving the Doctor. She started working at UNIT and found herself a boyfriend, but then it all went wrong.

In the episode “Lucky Day,” Ruby started romancing a podcaster called Conrad (Jonah Hauer-King) who had briefly met the Doctor as a young child and was seemingly full of awe for him. But Conrad was hiding his real intentions. In a nod to real-life COVID-denial, Conrad believed that everything involving UNIT was a hoax, and ended up hacking and terrorizing the organization before being attacked by a monster and ending up in prison.

So poor Ruby was dealing with a lot of negative emotions by the time the episode ended. Gibson spoke to Nerdist about where Ruby goes after such a betrayal. “If I was her, I’d look in the mirror and just sob, but she’s stronger than me!” Gibson said. “However, in the end, she does say to Kate, ‘I think I just need time by myself alone to figure some things out.’ and that’s what she needs. I picture it being some kind of Gallifreyan therapy or something that Kate’s given her or a contact to get with all the past companions for therapy meeting.”

But what about Ruby further down the line? “I can say that she comes back in episodes seven and eight, so that gives you a little bit of insight so that she’s ready for more. They haven’t broken her completely yet,” Gibson told Nerdist. Episodes seven and eight are titled “Wish World” and “The Reality War” and will serve as a two-part season finale.

It’s not known yet if Ncuti Gawta’s Doctor will get a Season 3… but Gibson knows what she personally has in mind for Ruby’s future. “I picture her rocking it out with her band. I don’t think she’s going to go near men anytime soon… I personally wouldn’t,” the actress said. “And probably just nipping with Belinda every now and again. I think she just needs a simple life. She’s got her two mothers, she’s got her friends, even though they think she’s mental. We need to ask Russell [T Davies], but I hope it’s a happy one, not a sad one because she’s had many of them.

Gibson Was Thrilled To Work With Jonah Hauer-King

Gibson has sung the praises of Jonah Hauer-King in the leadup to “Lucky Day,” and now she gets to talk about how well he played a character who was lying about being a decent person. “It was my first time working with him, but hopefully not my last, because he’s an incredible actor,” Gibson said.

She went on, “I remember reading the script and not knowing who [was playing] Conrad. So I was messaging Russell like, “Come on, tell me!”. And he was like, “Oh, has no one told you? It’s Jonah Hauer-King.” And I was buzzing, to say the least. He’s really gifted and he’s such a giving actor, and he has such a beautiful, calm nature about him on set that I really need. He is nothing like Conrad, obviously.

It remains to be seen if Conrad, last seen being broken out of prison by mysterious villain Mrs. Flood, will show up in the season finale.
