The Rookie Star Melissa O’Neil Gives Fans Look Behind the Scenes at Her Season 8 Prep

The Rookie star Melissa O’Neil takes fans behind-the-scenes of the series’ Season 8 prep. A new video gives a glimpse of what they can expect in the upcoming season.

As seen in a video posted to O’Neil’s Instagram page on Jul. 2, fans can see various cast members from The Rookie hitting the shooting range in preparation of the hit cop drama’s upcoming eighth season. “Still a few days out till I’m back on set but we’re getting ready,” O’Neil wrote. “We’re so lucky to have access to these resources and knowledge from our team: Chic and Bob are the best and as you can imagine they have the craziest stories! It’s a wild thing to work with firearms,” O’Neil added.

O’Neil has portrayed fan-favorite LAPD Officer Lucy Chen since The Rookie premiered back in 2018. The series follows Nathan Fillion’s John Nolan, a late-in-life rookie at the Los Angeles Police Department who signs up for the force after a personal experience being caught in the center of an armed bank robbery. The Rookie‘s ensemble cast also includes Eric Winter, Richard T. Jones, Mekia Cox, Shawn Ashmore and Alyssa Diaz, and has hosted numerous guest stars ranging from Pete Davidson to Flula Borg in various recurring roles.

O’Neil’s Chen has been in the middle of the series’ hottest romance with Winter’s Bradford for years, with the pair’s will-they-won’t-they relationship serving as a key focal point of The Rookie in recent years. Back in June, The Rookie showrunner and creator Alexi Hawley confirmed that, while Chen and Bradford (or Chenford) will indeed be getting back together sometime in Season 8, what their relationship looks like after that isn’t set in stone. “I do think that we’ve put those characters through a lot on their journey back, and I think we’re almost there,” Hawley said regarding the pair’s trajectory in recent seasons.

Is The Rookie Really Getting Another Spinoff?

While The Rookie has already churned out one failed spinoff in the form of 2022’s The Rookie: Feds starring Niecy Nash-Bates as Simone Clark, Hawley has been open about the possibility of another attempt at spinning the series’ universe out into something bigger than itself. “There’s a script that I’ve been going back and forth with ABC about,” Hawley said back in May. “They give notes and I do the work and I’m an ever-hopeful human being. And so I would love nothing more than to expand the universe and go make it. So we’ll see. I don’t know. I mean the business right now is a little what it is, but I mean, I remain hopeful. We’ll see what happens.”
