Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Knows How It Can Fix Catherine’s Forgotten Problem

Grey’s Anatomy season 22 has the chance to resolve Catherine’s forgotten problem from 3 years ago if it approaches it like one story from season 21. Catherine’s cancer has been an ongoing storyline since Grey’s Anatomy season 15, when the shocking reveal impacted so many characters in Grey’s Anatomy and forced Meredith and Tom Koracick to collaborate to treat Catherine.

The focus on Catherine’s cancer storyline seesawed over time, becoming more or less important depending on how it progressed. However, before Grey’s Anatomy season 21’s premiere, season 19 had already reprised it, highlighting a major problem that the medical drama never solved, nor mentioned again after Tom Koracick raised it with Catherine. Grey’s Anatomy season 22 can change that.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Proved It Should Be Meredith Following Catherine For Good

While Grey’s Anatomy season 19, episode 5 focused greatly on Meredith and Zola’s search for a suitable school, it also revealed more about the Fox Foundation through the possibility of Meredith studying Alzheimer’s there, something Jackson Avery really wanted her to pursue. However, the episode sneakily revealed through Koracick’s worries that Catherine’s cancer was progressing and she opposed aggressive treatments.

Catherine’s cancer storyline didn’t return until Grey’s Anatomy season 21, although doing so in a completely different form, as the medical drama revealed her problems didn’t have to do directly with her primary cancer. Still, Grey’s Anatomy never disclosing what Catherine did after Koracick’s revelation didn’t solve the mystery, also highlighting how easy it was for Catherine to ignore Tom.

Grey’s Anatomy season 21 offered a different perspective by having Catherine’s complications investigated by Meredith, especially as the two were simultaneously fighting over where Meredith and Amelia should have continued their research. Their arguments painted a picture where it wasn’t immediately clear who would come out on top, something that was never impossible to predict when Tom and Catherine argued.

How things evolved in season 21 nevertheless proved that Meredith should continue to be Catherine’s doctor in Grey’s Anatomy season 22. In those difficult moments, Meredith kept Catherine’s secret but also stood her ground, convincing her to investigate the complication instead of immediately considering the worst possible scenario. Involving Bailey also proved the right choice, as they both helped Catherine.

The respect Meredith and Catherine have for one another was as undeniable as their being on different sides of their fight about the Alzheimer’s research. This made the exploration of Catherine’s complications more interesting to witness, and potentially more rewarding as a storyline too, as it can make how similar they are obvious to one another.

This could lead to the perfect reconciliation of Catherine and Meredith’s fight, too. Grey’s Anatomy season 21’s ending showed how Catherine immediately got the depth of the challenge that Meredith faced to make her research happen, something that wasn’t as clear to Richard.

Meredith checking on Catherine would keep them in one another’s orbit, forcing them to see how similar they are, and how they would benefit more from fighting the system hand-in-hand instead of fighting each other. Hopefully, Grey’s Anatomy season 22 can continue that storyline, making Meredith’s research story even more central.
