Bertha’s Gilded Age Season 4 Could Get Even Worse If This Character Comes Back

The Gilded Age season 3’s ending left Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) devastated, but the return of one character in season 4 could make Bertha’s life even worse. After gaining more social power by hosting the Newport Ball, Bertha’s world crumbled when her husband left her at the end of The Gilded Age season 3.

Out of all of The Gilded Age‘s characters, Bertha Russell is easily among the strongest and most ruthless, but the loss of her husband, George Russell (Morgan Spector), will haunt her deeply going into the next season. The Gilded Age season 4 will need to explore the fallout of George’s decision, including potentially bringing back one unexpected character.

Bertha’s Sister Returning Could Make Mrs. Russell’s The Gilded Age Season 4 Worse

Monica O'Brien smirking in the gilded age

Merritt Wever joined The Gilded Age‘s cast in season 3 as Monica O’Brien. Sadly, Monica was only featured for one episode to attend the wedding of Gladys Russell (Taissa Farmiga) and Hector, Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb). During that time, it was abundantly clear that Bertha and her sister did not see eye to eye.

Bertha Russell is a very ambitious character, and she wanted everything to be perfect for her daughter’s wedding, in spite of what Gladys wanted. Mrs. Russell steamrolled over her family’s wishes, but she was so convinced she was right that Bertha was blindsided by George leaving, creating an opening for Monica to return in season 4.

With George Russell and their son, Larry Russell (Harry Richardson), living at their men’s club, Monica could return to New York to help Bertha, who is now alone at the Russell’s palatial home on East 61st Street. An angry Bertha would feel even worse about her situation with Monica present, but it might ultimately help her.

Bertha Russell is going to have a very tough season 4 without her family around, and Monica’s support could come off the wrong way, given how blunt the character was in The Gilded Age season 3, episode 4. However, Monica might be the only family Bertha has left to confide in, so she may have no other choice.

Why Bertha’s Sister Needs To Return In The Gilded Age Season 4

Bertha heartbreak The Gilded Age

Merritt Wever is a great actor, and her time as Monica O’Brien was very short-lived. If for no other reason than to give audiences more of her blunt takes on the lifestyles of The Gilded Age‘s wealthiest characters, Monica needs to make a comeback. More than that, though, Bertha’s sister could play a big role in her future.

Bertha Russell may not want to see her sister again and or hear Monica’s opinion on her plight, but Monica’s down-to-Earth nature could be exactly what Bertha needs. After pressuring Gladys to marry Hector, and dealing with the fallout, Bertha needs someone on her side.

Monica would undoubtedly be brutally honest with her sister, but that could be the only way for Bertha to recognize what she needs to change in order to win her husband back. If Monica can help make Bertha see the error of her ways in The Gilded Age season 4, she may be able to help save the Russells’ marriage.
