ABC Bluntly Reveals Bobby’s True Fate In 9-1-1 Season 9

On the heels of the suprising death of Bobby, showrunner Tim Minear chalked the decision to write off such a vital character to the show’s commitment to realism. Fans were quick to point out that 9-1-1 has never really been grounded by reality. If anything, the fact that its characters are almost invincible is part of its appeal. Because no main player has died before Bobby, there’s some sense of comfort in watching it.
9-1-1 Season 9, Episode 4 Doubles Down On Bobby’s Death
Because Bobby’s death didn’t seem to make sense, theories about a his true state immediately started, including the possibility that he’s secrely alive. When news broke out that 9-1-1 season 9‘s opening case would send Athena to space, the hypothesis evolved into the idea that Bobby is in a lab in space.
In 9-1-1 season 9, episode 4, however, ABC effectively squashes that idea via a blunt message from Hen — he’s not out there. As Athena behaved like she seemingly have a dearth wish, her long-time friend attempts to wake her up from her careless decisions. However, it’s also a meta-comment on the continued hopes that somehow, Krause will return and Bobby’s death is just part of an elaborate plot.
Can 9-1-1 Really Survive Without Bobby?
So far, 9-1-1 season 9’s storytelling is still heavily influenced by Bobby’s death. On land, Chimney had to make a difficult decision, effectively assuming his place as the new 118 captain. Out in space, Athena was forced to finally come to terms with losing her husband. 9-1-1 season 9’s true test is offer compelling storylines after the dust has settled.
For what it’s worth, 9-1-1 season 9 has planted plot seeds that could grow into fresh and intriguing storylines. Harry working on becoming a firefighter after a shift with the 118 is an interesting choice, especially after Bobby’s death. It would be curious how Athena would deal with it on a day-to-day basis. Elsewhere, the seeming split of Buck and Eddie is an odd choice, given how much the fans have been clamoring for their collective plots.
