The Grey’s Anatomy universe is expected to expand once again in the midseason. ABC gave the green light to a new Texas-set spinoff that’s expected to be an “edgy drama about a team at a rural West Texas medical center, the last chance for care before miles of nowhere.”
Though the main cast for the series will center on some new characters, there are also expected to be some crossovers with characters we’ve come to know and love in the Grey’s universe already. So, who might that include? We’ve got our wishlist of potential crossover characters from Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, and Station 19 right here. Grey’s Anatomy Texas Spinoff, 2027, ABC
Levi Schmitt
This is probably the most obvious answer, given the fact that he actually lives in Texas after departing the show in Season 21. The actor, Jake Borelli, is still a very big part of the Grey’s family, having returned for a later cameo and even directing one of Season 22’s episodes. So it makes perfect sense that a show set in the state where he is currently located would involve him in some way or another.
Addison Montgomery
Thanks to her Grey’s Anatomy return, we now know that Addison and Jake (Benjamin Bratt) didn’t have their happily ever after, despite the gushy ending on Private Practice. Her commitment to providing women’s reproductive health options to in-need areas has taken a toll on her, but she refused to give up. Right now, Texas has one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the country, so it would make total sense for her to bring her rolling clinic in or around the Lone Star state.
Maya Bishop
After her close call in the final episodes of Grey’s Season 22, Maya (Danielle Savre) might be rethinking some things. The Station 19 alum was saved from her burns by former fellow fireman Ben Warren (Jason George), but perhaps she and Carina (Stefania Spampinato) would consider a change of scenery for a fresh new start? Like Addison, Carina has a reason to be there, what with the challenges mothers-to-be may face in the state in the current climate.
Sloan Riley
We haven’t seen her in quite some time, but actress Leven Rambin has thrown her own character, Sloan, into the potential mix of Grey’s alums that could fit in with the new series. Perhaps the death of her father, Mark (Eric Dane), will have inspired her to turn things around and grow up a bit … maybe even going into medicine to help others.
Cooper and Charlotte
The finale for Private Practice saw Cooper (Paul Adelstein) and Charlotte (KaDee Strickland) navigating new parenthood after the birth of their triplets. Perhaps they’ll be like the thousands of other California-to-Texas transplants to raise their new brood with a bit more wide-open space…. and a new private practice, of course. (Besides, the two actors already reunited once for Cruel Summer, so clearly they like working together still.)
Mika Yasuda
Mika (Midori Francis) had an army of dedicated fans who were none too thrilled to see her exit Grey’s in Season 21. The character suffered from trauma after the sudden death of her little sister and decided to leave the hospital, but perhaps time — and distance from the place where it happened — will heal that wound enough for her to get back to the business of saving lives. After all, she does still have some student loans to pay off.
Molly Grey
We haven’t seen or heard from Molly Grey-Thompson (Mandy Siegfried), the other sister to Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), in years. What we do know is that she and her child (or children, now?) live with her husband in Bahrain, for his military service. But perhaps he could be restationed to one of the military installations in Texas next?
Stephanie Edwards
After her traumatic brush with death in Season 13, as she narrowly survived a fire, killed a rapist, and saved a child from certain doom, Stephanie Edwards (Jerrika Hinton) decided to leave medicine, claiming she was tired of spending her entire life in hospitals. Perhaps a different setting, though, is just what she needs to get back on her feet and continue impressing all of the attendings with her mad surgical skills. Certainly, Catherine Fox (Debbie Allen) has a hospital out there somewhere and would be delighted to employ the woman who once received her highest compliment ever.
Benson Kwan
Though Harry Shum Jr. isn’t totally sure he’s not coming back to Grey’s Anatomy — after all, Blue didn’t do anything worse than Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) has without consequence — it sure looked like he was fired for good in the Season 22 finale. So maybe he’ll take leave of Seattle and try his luck at a new establishment in Texas next.
Alex Karev
Last, but certainly not least, a lot of Grey’s Anatomy fans are still sour over the way Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) left the show, even if they liked him getting back together with Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl). Perhaps to make it up to everyone, he’ll return, running a top-tier peds operation in Texas — and bonus points if he helps migrant children again somehow.
