Misha Collins Opens Up About Supernatural Officially Ending With The Winchesters Cancellation
Castiel actor Misha Collins opens up about the Supernatural franchise officially coming to an end on the back of The Winchesters’ cancellation.
Misha Collins shares his reaction to learning The Winchesters had been cancelled, marking the official end of the Supernatural franchise. Making his debut as the angel Castiel in Supernatural season 4, Collins’ role was initially developed as a guest character designed to introduce aspects of Christian theology into the series. Due to Castiel’s popularity, however, the show’s creators later expanded the role, eventually becoming a recurring character right up until season 15’s ending. While Collins would never appear in The Winchesters season 1, the actor had previously expressed his desire to make a cameo appearance before the show was cancelled in May 2023.
During an interview with Deadline, the Supernatural actor was quizzed about how he felt about the spinoff series’ demise and what it meant for the franchise. Calling the news just sad, rather than bittersweet, Collins expressed his fondness for the franchise which played such an instrumental role in his career. He also said that he still hopes for a series revival or movie at some point in the future. Check out his comments below:
I was just cleaning out my garage, and I had all of these boxes and I was finally sorting through it. I don’t know where all of this stuff came from, but I had like 60 or 70 Supernatural t-shirts and dozens of copies of Entertainment Weekly magazines that we were on the cover of. I was like, ‘Oh. I just have to bring all this stuff to Goodwill. This chapter of my life is over.’ I was gonna say bittersweet, but it’s actually just sad. I’m not sure what the sweet part of it is.
We have to move on and take on other exciting projects in our lives, but Supernatural is always going to have just such a fond place in my heart because it was such a big chapter of my life, but it also so radically changed my life. I still hold on to some shred of hope that, at some point, we can do some resurrection of the show. Some movie or limited-run series… find some way to say hello and goodbye to the characters one more time.
What Are The Chances Of A Supernatural Revival?
With the original flagship series running for an impressive 15 seasons, it was initially hoped that The Winchesters could continue the Supernatural franchise for years to come. Much like Eric Kripke’s original plans for Supernatural, The Winchesters’ showrunner Robbie Thompson reportedly had a five-season arc planned out for the spinoff series. Unfortunately, however, those plans have now been put by the wayside after efforts to secure a new home for the series failed.
With all hopes for a continuation of The Winchesters now seemingly exhausted, many Supernatural viewers are calling out for a potential return to the main series. While it has been less than three years since the season 15 finale saw Jensen Ackles’ Dean find peace in the afterlife, the actor himself has even touted the possibility of a 10-episode Supernatural revival series at some point in the future. Between the cast’s willingness to return and the demands of a passionate audience, it is very likely that a Supernatural revival will happen eventually.
Yet before any series revival occurs, audiences may need to exercise patience and wait for more time to pass before it eventuates. Though revivals, reboots, and sequel series are becoming an increasingly common trend for studios looking to capitalize on popular franchises, the gaps between shows can often span multiple years, even decades. Between The Winchesters’ cancellation and Supernatural’s own relatively recent series conclusion, it may still be far too soon to expect a proper revival to happen just yet.
