Steven Moffat Sends Fans Reeling Over Potential Doctor Who Return
Former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat gives fans food for thought with his latest Instagram picture.
With a new Russell T Davies era approaching, fans have never been more eager for another former Doctor Who showrunner to announce his return to the longest-running sci-fi series, and it seems like Steven Moffat has decided to give people something to talk about in that regard.
Moffat served as the showrunner on Doctor Who between 2010 and 2017, although he had previously written quite a few episodes, including the all-time favorites “Blink” along with the two-parter “The Empty Child” and “The Doctor Dances,” during Davies’ run. Moffat’s time as the driving force of the show is still remembered as one of the best (if not the best) in the series’ entire 60-year history. Naturally, viewers are craving the writer’s return to Doctor Who alongside the new old showrunner — at least for a few episodes if not to succeed Davies in the foreseeable future.

There have been rumors of Moffat’s comeback to the series before, but he has diligently denied every last one of them. Now fans seem to believe that the writer will be rejoining Doctor Who… because of social media. On Aug. 6, Moffat shared a photo of himself in front of a blue police box, which conveniently looks a lot like the Doctor’s TARDIS, on his Instagram account with the caption: “Briefly in the homeland. Got a lift. (This means NOTHING other than I found a police box.).”
Evidently, the writer flew back to the U.K. and came across a familiar object. Unable to resist the urge to tease Whovians all over the world, he snapped a quick photo, although he did feel the need to clarify that it had meant “nothing.” Fans, including Outlander star Alexander Vlahos, went berserk in the comments soon after Moffat posted the picture, joking that the writer had basically confirmed his long-awaited return to Doctor Who and would be writing “at least three episodes.”
Is There Hope for Another Steven Moffat Era in Doctor Who?
When Davies confirmed his involvement in Doctor Who’s 60th-anniversary specials, starring David Tennant and Catherine Tate, and subsequent seasons with Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor, Moffat almost immediately ended up in the spotlight, too. Since then, the writer has been claiming that he is not following in his former colleague’s footsteps at the moment. This could very well turn out to be true, or it could be the opposite — after all, Moffat has told a few white lies in response to fans’ theories regarding the 50th-anniversary special “The Day of the Doctor” and other episodes’ storylines in the past.
