Good Omens Theory: Will Crowley Stop Being a Demon in S3?

Neil Gaiman’s new revelation seems to support a Good Omens fan theory circling around the Internet regarding Crowley’s demon status in Season 3.

Good Omens Season 2 has given viewers a much-needed in-depth look at Crowley and Aziraphale’s beginnings and evolution over time, but it also might have provided a hint at Crowley’s non-demonic future.

There is a popular fan theory in the Good Omens fandom that David Tennant’s Crowley will be back to his angelic self in Season 3 when he is ready to give up being a demon for Michael Sheen’s Aziraphale. One user’s peculiar question and Neil Gaiman’s even more peculiar answer, posted via his Tumblr account, presumably offer a rich playground for this theory to come to fruition next season.

Some eagle-eyed Good Omens fans have noticed that Crowley’s eye color changes over the course of the series. In Season 1, when Crowley makes his grand serpent entrance into the Garden of Eden to tempt Eve, his eyes are full-on yellow and snake-like. That’s exactly the way Crowley’s eyes look in the famous flaming Bentley scene and in the scene where Aziraphale’s bookshop is ablaze and Crowley thinks that his beloved angel is dead. The rest of the time, the demon’s eyes only have a little bit of yellow in the center. Gaiman, the show’s creator and the co-author of the original 1990 novel, has confirmed that this change is “very intentional,” and not in fact caused by a contacts switch or a continuity error.

While Crowley’s eyes seem to go full yellow whenever he is either vulnerable and experiencing some strong emotion or doing Hell’s bidding, his eyes look more human-like as soon as he is near Aziraphale and/or doing some good. A few Good Omens fans feel that this new piece of information can serve as evidence that Crowley will metaphorically “rise” in Season 3 — he was once an angel who fell, so now the audience thinks that he is going to do the opposite and renounce his demonic self for Aziraphale’s sake. The Season 2 finale gives Crowley that option, but he rejects it, trying to make the angel realize that Heaven is not the place to be right now and offering him to run away together.

Will Crowley Become an Angel in Good Omens Season 3?

This fan theory may seem like an easy out for the ineffable husbands, which can essentially be their happily-ever-after in the Good Omens finale, but in reality, it’s very unlikely to happen. Gaiman himself has repeatedly said how important Crowley’s demonic past is and how he doesn’t want to betray himself and go back to who he was thousands of years ago.

Besides, Crowley’s eyes are not the exception to the rule — other Good Omens characters have experienced an eye color change throughout the show. For instance, Hastur’s eyes switch between black-ish and full-on black, and Gabriel’s eye color goes from bright violet to a milder shade at various points in time.
