Frasier Revival Synopsis Teases the Fate of the Cheers Bar, Reveals New Details

The upcoming Frasier reboot series synopsis reveals new story points and provides an update on the classic Cheers bar.

Paramount’s upcoming Frasier reboot unveils an updated synopsis with fresh details about the series, including a hint that the famed Cheers bar had its proverbial last call some time ago.

Per Entertainment Weekly, the Cheers bar located in Boston is “no longer,” suggesting the famous backdrop for the titular series doesn’t exist anymore. The apparent non-existence of the bar will be disappointing news for Cheers fans anticipating Frasier revival, which returns to Boston as the titular psychiatrist goes home for a much-needed restart after spending the original series in Seattle. Instead, the revival cast will be frequenting a new tavern called Mahoney’s, which is named after late Frasier star John Mahoney, who featured as Frasier’s father Martin during the original show. Director James Burrows joked he wanted to name the tavern after Frasier’s parent show, saying, “I preferred ‘Cheers,’ but they didn’t want that for some reason.”

Frasier Crane Returns to Boston

The synopsis states Frasier’s return to Boston is partly due to his hopes of reconnecting with his estranged son Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott). However, Freddy has no real interest in repairing his relationship with his father, but realizes he doesn’t have much of a choice. Little other plot details about the revival are known other than Frasier going back home to forge new relationships and fulfill lifelong dreams following his run in the Emerald City.

The Frasier revival recently released first-look images from the series as well as its Paramount+ premiere date. The namesake series has been touted for several years by Kelsey Grammer, with Paramount+ giving the green light in 2021 to develop it. In May of last year, Paramount+ officially ordered the revival to series, with Season 1 of the reboot featuring 10 episodes.

While notable names from the original series like David Hyde Pierce won’t appear, the Frasier reboot will see some of the first show’s characters in guest or recurring roles including Lilith Sternin (Bebe Neuwirth), Frasier’s ex-wife, and the titular character’s close friend Roz Doyle (Peri Gilpin). Cutmore plays Freddy, who was portrayed by Trevor Einhorn in the original show. Meanwhile, Letterkenny’s Eve Salgueiro (Eve), Toks Olagundoye (Olivia) and Hollywood newbie Anders Keith (David Crane) are part of the main cast.

The original Frasier series is regarded as one of the greatest sitcoms ever made, winning 37 Primetime Emmy Awards during its run between 1993 and 2004, a then-record for a scripted show. The reboot was co-created by Chris Harris and Joe Cristalli, with the first episode’s title being another ode to Mahoney and reminiscent of the original’s pilot.
