The series surely did this character dirty.
Caroline Forbes is one of the main female characters in the Vampire Diaries. The supernatural series follows a group of teens in Mystic Falls, but not everything is as it seems. There are rivalries, romances that defy time and plenty of drama, paired with creatures that are not of the natural world.
Caroline Forbes is first introduced to audiences as what could be considered a stereotypical popular highschool girl. She is head of a few student committees, honor student, cheerleading captain, with a competitive side fueled by deep insecurity.
Before her transition Caroline was involved in a car accident that left her with internal bleeding and things were not looking good for her.
Her friends convinced vampire Damon Salvatore to heal her by feeding her his blood. She is smothered to death in hospital during her recovery by Katherine Pierce in a ploy to turn her into a vampire and use her in a bigger plot. Leading up to the car accident, Damon had been using and manipulating Caroline in order to feed off her blood, basically using her as a blood bank.
She continues to suffer misfortune throughout the series even after turning into a vampire. Her relationship with her boyfriend Matt ends because even though they love each other, her turning into a vampire complicated things too much.
Her relationship with her mother is severed after she finds out Caroline is a vampire, and although she compels her mother to forget, it is still painful for her. Her mother later passes away from cancer with Caroline unable to save her, all she can do is be by her side.
Caroline had a few romances on the show that ended up causing more harm than good. Her first love Tyler ends up being sired to someone else as he is a werewolf and forced to do their bidding, which causes his relationship with Caroline to end. Stefan and Caroline had romantic tension for the longest time, but then he abandons her for three years.
When things finally work out for the pair, which many fans argue to be soulmates, Stefan is killed shortly after their wedding leaving Caroline alone again.
Fans knew that the finale of Vampire Diaries was going to be bittersweet, but they really hoped for a happy ending for Caroline. It seems that her character experienced heartbreak, pain, and betrayal over and over again throughout the series, and when the ending came, things never really got better for her.
She and another character end up opening and running The Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted after Stefan’s death, which might bring her peace and closure but this doesn’t compare to the happy ending everyone can agree she deserved.
