Amelia’s Apology Tour Shows Her Growth In Grey’s Anatomy
In Grey’s Anatomy season 19, episode 17, Amelia attempted to make things right with Yasuda and Winston, who she hurt after Kai and Maggie left.
Grey’s Anatomy season 19, episode 17, featured Amelia going on an apology tour to Yasuda and Winston for her actions in the previous episode, which is an example of how much she’s grown over the seasons. Amelia entered the Grey’s Anatomy universe through its spinoff Private Practice but became a series regular on Grey’s after the spinoff’s cancelation in 2013. Amelia has been through a lot during her time on both shows, and she has made many mistakes and poor decisions, but her apologizing to Yasuda and Winston in Grey’s Anatomy season 19 is a welcome change for her character.
Amelia was first introduced in Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice as Derek Shepherd’s youngest sister and a budding neurosurgeon who was getting her life together after years of battling addiction. While she has two relapses, once in Private Practice and another in Grey’s Anatomy, she seemed to finally be in a good place, only to fall back into old bad habits when her sisters, Meredith and Maggie, and her partner, Kai, all leave for other cities. Fortunately, Amelia didn’t relapse in Grey’s Anatomy season 19, but she has to face the poor decisions she made in episode 16 and is starting to do so.
Amelia Is Finally Taking Responsibility For Her Actions
One of the biggest issues with Amelia’s character over the years is that she doesn’t often take responsibility for her actions. This was one of the biggest reasons that she and Derek had a strained relationship for so many years and why she still has a poor relationship with the remaining Shepherds. When Amelia was diagnosed with a brain tumor in Grey’s Anatomy season 14 that had likely been growing for 10 years, she and other characters even jokingly blamed her past bad decisions on her tumor. While it was comedic, it also unveiled a trend for Amelia’s character that she is now breaking in Grey’s Anatomy season 19.
Fortunately, Addison appeared in Grey’s Anatomy season 19, episode 16, to give Amelia a much-needed wake-up call and keep her from spiraling and hurting people further. While it’s understandable that Amelia felt highly emotional after two of the most important people in her life left, it does not excuse her actions. Amelia apologizing to Yasuda and Winston shows that she understands this and is willing to take responsibility when she hurts other people. Amelia told Yasuda she is “a person who believes in accountability,” proving how much she’s grown in Grey’s Anatomy.
Yasuda Could Be Amelia’s New Mentee
While Amelia hasn’t always had the best relationship with her fellow Grey’s Anatomy characters, she’s always been at her best when helping others. She is very passionate about her work as a neurosurgeon and her patients and growing the medical field. However, she hasn’t had a mentee in Grey’s Anatomy since Stephanie Edwards, her strongest protégé, left in the season 13 finale following the hospital explosion. Now that Amelia’s apologized and Yasuda has a grant and can stay at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, it would be nice to see her taking Yasuda under her wing in Grey’s Anatomy as it could benefit both of their characters.
