Better Call Saul Stars Disagree on What Comes Next for Kim and Jimmy

Bob Odenkirk and Rhea Seehorn have different theories on what happens to their characters after the series ends.

The ambiguous ending of Better Call Saul even has the show’s stars unsure of what comes next.

Bob Odenkirk and Rhea Seehorn spoke about their theories on their characters’ future in a new interview with Vulture. Last year, the Breaking Bad spinoff series would air its final episodes, bringing an end to the story of Jimmy McGill (Odenkirk) and Kim Wexler (Seehorn). For their final scene together, the former lovers reunited after Jimmy came clean about his crimes, ultimately landing a lengthy sentence in federal prison. When Kim takes one last look at Jimmy when leaving the facility, it’s left unclear if this was a final goodbye, but Seehorn believes that’s not the case.

“I think she comes back,” explains Seehorn. “[Co-creator] Peter [Gould] said, ‘I want to write a finale where the characters and the story continue after the screen goes to black.’ I was like, okay, but when I’m asked what I think, I’m going to say she comes back, because I’m a hopeless romantic. I don’t think she becomes the Kim she used to be. But you do see her begin to practice law again. I think she tries to figure out a way to reduce his sentence on the up and up, not with a scam. I do think she returns.”

Odenkirk is quick to say he doesn’t agree, as he adds, “I just think it really is a goodbye. The word that comes to mind when I think about the journey of that final episode is surrender. The struggle inside Jimmy has always been with what he senses is true or what he should do versus his strange, unique instincts.”

“These are two characters who had incredible intelligence about other people and struggled to have any self-awareness of any real depth about themselves,” Odenkirk goes on to explain. “But in that final episode, they were granted a deep level of self-awareness that they always were capable of. Only with every other option stolen from them did Jimmy realize the only way out is through surrendering. I thought it was beautiful.”

Both Odenkirk and Seehorn have been nominated for acting awards at the Emmys for their work on the final episodes of Better Call Saul. The show now has 55 total nominations but has yet to win a golden statuette. Odenkirk also spoke about his hopes that the show will finally win an Emmy with its final episodes. Whether that happens remains to be seen.
