Blue Bloods’ Confirmed Sequel Spinoff Seemingly Undoes Its Best Character Ending

The recently confirmed Blue Bloods sequel seems poised to undo a perfect wrap-up for one of its most popular characters. The Tom Selleck-led police and family drama was canceled after season 14 despite a massive fan-led protest to save it. Many of the stars were also vocal about wanting the series to continue. However, CBS held firm to its decision, though the network did hint at the possibility of a Blue Bloods spinoff series.

In the meantime, Blue Bloods’ series finale raised questions about many characters’ futures, including Danny Reagan’s (Donnie Wahlberg). Danny realized during the finale that he missed having a partner to come home to after difficult missions. Thus, six years after Linda’s (Amy Carlson) death, Danny decided to get back into dating, and he asked Baez to have pizza with him. This ending implied that Danny and Baez would finally have a shot at a relationship, although it was unclear whether it would work out.

Blue Bloods’ Spinoff Sequel Will See Danny Move To Boston & With A New Partner

The Blue Bloods sequel, titled Boston Blue, focuses on Danny’s new life after he moves to Beantown. So far, there is no information about why he decides to move to a new city to work for a different police department. This move seems strange, considering that Danny’s close-knit family all live in New York. However, it keeps one of Blue Bloods’ best characters central to the action of the new series.

Once Danny moves to Boston, he will work with a new partner, presumably on homicide cases. Reportedly, his new partner comes from a prominent Boston police family. Thus, it is likely that Boston Blue will try to recreate the excitement and interest in Blue Bloods’ Reagan family by introducing this new tight-knit clan of law enforcement officers. It’s unclear yet how closely Danny will interact with this family or what interactions he will have with his own.

Danny’s New Boston Work Suggests His Budding Romance With Baez Didn’t Work Out

Sadly, Boston Blue’s premise suggests that Danny and Baez’s (Marisa Ramirez) Blue Bloods romance didn’t work out. While there has been little information released yet about the sequel series, there is no indication that Baez is coming with Danny, so far. Thus, it’s most likely that the two decided romance wasn’t for them or broke up after trying to be a couple. This off-screen breakup is disappointing, considering that Danny and Baez’s attempt at romance in Blue Bloods’ finale was supposed to be a happy ending for the two characters.

Baez has been his primary partner in homicide cases for over a decade, so a failed romance between the two of them would lead to an awkward situation at work.

That said, breaking up with Baez gives Danny a logical reason to move out of New York City. Baez has been his primary partner in homicide cases for over a decade, so a failed romance between the two of them would lead to an awkward situation at work. Additionally, Baez is Danny’s first attempt at romance since Linda’s death. Thus, Danny may decide it’s best to take a new job in a different city so that he can get a fresh start after his romance falls apart.

Conversely, if Danny gets an offer that sounds like a step-up for his career, Baez might decide that she cannot be the reason he doesn’t take the job. This would lead to a heartbreaking situation in which Baez sacrifices their burgeoning relationship so that Danny can accept the job in Boston.

Can Baez Still Appear In Boston Blue?

Boston Blue won’t premiere until the 2025-2026 TV season, so there is plenty of time for more casting news. Unless the new series announces definitively that Ramirez is not signing onto it as Baez, there is a possibility that she will be a series regular. Additionally, the showrunners might make changes to the series after the pilot episode. Something similar happened with Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, which added Missy as a recurring character despite initial news stating she would not be part of the sequel series to Young Sheldon.

…even if Baez doesn’t appear regularly in the sequel series, Boston Blue could utilize her as a guest character when the story calls for it.

If Danny and Baez decide to attempt a long-distance relationship, she could appear sporadically on video chats and come to Boston once in a while. Additionally, Danny may visit New York occasionally to see Eddie and Jamie’s new baby and allow for a Blue Bloods reunion. Because of this, Even if Baez doesn’t appear regularly in the sequel series, Boston Blue could utilize her as a guest character when the story calls for it. Hopefully, the spinoff does so instead of ending the Danny/Baez romance that only began in Blue Bloods’ final episode.
