Bob Odenkirk Rejected Saul Goodman Role At First, But One Thing Changed His Mind (Thankfully)
When the hesitation turned out to be for good.
Better Call Saul is one of those rare examples of a spinoff that is just as good (if not better) than its parent show.
Breaking Bad allowed us to delve deeper into the character of Saul Goodman, and since then he has won our hearts with his unique way of life.
Bob Odenkirk has done an amazing job portraying a struggling lawyer tied to a life of crime.
Now, fans and critics consider his work on Better Call Saul to be his greatest role on television. But there was a time when Bob wasn’t so sure about taking the lead on the show.
Initially Odenkirk declined the idea of being a part of a prequel series. He had a pretty simple explanation then.
He said that he just couldn’t do it for the sake of his family. At the time, he was a parent of two teenagers, and it felt wrong for him to leave the family alone.
But then the cutest thing happened. It turns out that his kids actually overheard his phone call and the moment he turned down the role, and despite Odenkirk’s fears, they actually encouraged him to take it.
Odenkirk later explained in an interview with Howard Stern, that this moment of hesitation was never about the show.
He said he always believed in the project and sincerely wanted to be a part of this great thing. The actor was sure the writers would do a great script for the show and it would turn into a real success. And he was right.
There was some skepticism about the fact that Breaking Bad, the undoubtedly iconic show beloved by so many, would be followed by a spinoff series. But what happened in the end really blew everybody’s minds.
“It’s truly a work of art. People give it sh** because there isn’t quite as much action as BB, but the cinematography & writing make it a masterpiece [in my opinion]. Making a show that’s both a prequel and a sequel is wild and they pulled it off all while adding to the original story of BB,” Redditor RalphInMyMouth said.
Well, we should be really grateful to Odenkirk’s kids for the support they gave to his father. Because there would never be a show of this quality with another actor playing the iconic role of Saul Goodman.
