Bridgerton Showrunner Teases Eloise & Penelope’s Season 4 Friendship Following Their Reconciliation In Season 3

As Nicola Coughlan’s Penelope Featherington and Claudia Jessie’s Eloise Bridgerton enjoy a renewed friendship in Bridgerton season 4, showrunner Jess Brownell teases what awaits the pair in the new episodes. The hit Netflix period drama adapts Julia Quinn’s novels to screen, exploring the lives and loves of the titular family throughout their time in high society during the Regency period. Having made their debut in Bridgerton season 1, Penelope and Eloise are two close friends who find their relationship strained by the mystery behind the gossip column writer Lady Whistledown.
As production on Bridgerton season 4 continues, Brownell revealed to Entertainment Weekly the status of Penelope and Eloise’s friendship going into the events of the new episodes following their resolution in season 3. The showrunner affirmed that not only had the pair reunited, but had emerged from their hardships stronger than ever from their time apart, and the couples that they encountered had given them a greater perspective and allowed them to grow. Check out Brownell’s full explanation below:
They’re more bonded than ever! Their trials and tribulations last season have added new depth to their friendship, and we’re excited for viewers to see how their relationship looks now that they’ve each grown up a little.
What Penelope & Eloise’s Rekindled Friendship Means For Bridgerton’s Future
In the wake of finding out that Penelope had been the writer behind Whistledown’s letters in Bridgerton season 2, Eloise turned her back on her friend, given the trouble that the column had caused for her family, especially Eloise herself when suspicion turned to her. However, after taking a drastic transformation at the start of season 3 and the complications of the public hunt for Whistledown’s identity and Colin and Penelope’s marriage, the pair do reconnect. By the time the season Bridgerton season 3 ended, the two friends had reconciled before Eloise traveled to Scotland.
While Penelope’s tale has been adapted for the screen in season 4, the Lady Whistledown story is greatly expanded upon throughout the first three seasons, including its ramifications for Penelope and Eloise’s relationship. As such, there is no novel counterpart to how their friendship changes when compared to the television series’ development. However, with Eloise’s novel’s story seeing her name her child after her close friend, it can be assumed that the pair will remain on relatively good terms going forward.
Our Thoughts On Penelope & Eloise’s Bridgerton Future
With their friendship having been established as a core element of the series ever since the show first aired, many viewers may be relieved to see that the pair will remain a priority even after Penelope’s story has been adapted in Bridgerton season 4. One element that the Netflix series has struggled with following up with previously featured romantic leads following the events of their seasons. However, with Eloise and Penelope’s friendship being highlighted as being as strong as ever, it is clear season 3’s romantic leads will remain a key part of the series going forward.
